Me and a few other friends are thinking of getting a digicam as a present for someone's birthday, but our budget is quite tight and the person getting the camera is quite new in this area, so it doesnt have to be that fantastic. Any idea?

Is budget the only thing? Not particular about camera functions and specs etc?

I think you should consider these too?! No point getting a cheap digital cam that can't do much ....

My 2cents

yeah, the budget is quite important actually. that's why i'm just seeing what i can get for that kinda money, and this friend of ours isn't really into photography at the moment. that's why we're thinking of getting a simple camera first to get him started. of course if there's nothing available then we'll have to think of something else, although we really dunno what else to get.

thats too tight a budget... might as well buy a lomo.

yeah, i was afraid of that. oh well...how much dya reckon an A40 would cost now?

wah...150-200 SGD...

i think most likely will be a 1.3 MP DC leh...even now 2-3.2 MP cost about 400-500 SGD liao.

Maybe u can try to get those smaller ones ... there's a computer shop which is selling DC look-alike webcams which cost between 100-200 SGD..the shop is located @ Burlington Sq...just behind BK;)

but i staying in melbourne leh...electronic things here damn expensive you know? s45 here still cost more that $1000! that's why i'm hoping someone could provide me with a model then can ask someone to help me get it and bring over to melbourne.

Actually I've thought of that in the past. But it's kinda hard to reach out to the right market. But still I guess Melbourne is a good place to try and sell your 2nd hand stuff.

Since it's a birthday present, I would assume that 2nd hand goods are out of the question. though a 2nd hand 2MP camera might be possible, depending on model and age.

At $150 to $200, assuming SGD. Hmm It's going to be a tough hunt.

Some suggestions.

a) Fujifilm FinePix A101

b) Samsung SDC-100

c) HP Photosmart 120

There are more in this website

Look for cameras under US$110.

Item (a) is quite likely to fit into your budget as it is listed as US$89. Which is about S$160.

At that price, It can even take video!!!

3-in-1 Webcam can take pictures too, but they do not have LCDs to preview them unlike A101.
However I am not sure if you can still find A101 being sold in Singapore.

Happy hunting. ;)
