i going to get a flash recently but dont know which to get...
42AM can swivel but not 58AM
but 58AM is more powerful than 42AM

So which one to get?
When will you need a really powerful flash like 58AM?
can 58AM reduce the power of the flash as needed?

Sorry newbie here and usually taking fotos indoors and events...

You really need to read more about TTL flash technology...

The F58-AM is the flagship flash of the SONY system... so it has everything you need... it does not swivel in the usual way but it has a unique tilt function where it allows you to maintain the off-axis arrangement of the landscape mode when shooting in the portrait mode... do take a look at one of the photos posted in an earlier post in this thread...

The F42-AM swivels like other conventional flashes...

The flash power is modulated by the exposure sensors both in the body and the flash... the communication between flash and body will decide how long and how powerfully the flash discharges... for both flash, you can use manual mode...

Depends on your need, (guide number divided by distance equal to f/stop) if you really need to take a group picture which can be vast like hundred plus people, then 58AM is good. If only small group, just go for 42Am will do. :)

Thanks TME. i guess i need to understand flash more...
for now, i will put my flash on hold till knowing more... thank

Calvin

You don't have to put it on hold... the F42 will improve your picture quality instantly by providing better and more even illumination, and you have the AF IR assist lamp that will dramatically improve low light AF of your camera...

The thing with flashes is that there is a minimum functionality you should aim for... and the 42 has all that is required of a flash... the 58 is simply a more powerful version plus the additional benefit of the tilting head... so if money is no object or you do get a super deal, buy the 58... I just bought one new for $540...
