Having been selling some stuff of late. One interesting thing happened with one potential buyer in one of the sale. the person asked if I could furnish a receipt for the potential transaction. Didn't think very much about then, so I said yes, I could write up something and we could both sign it. Didn't ask the person why the receipt was needed.

Any thots on why the buyer wanted a receipt for a private sale? What would you include in that "receipt"? Terms and conditions, disclaimers, some "protective" legalese?

companies sometimes require proof of purchase for claims, so a receipt is required. I had a yahoo auction where the buyer simply printed out the auction page with the bid price.

A receipt is needed for income tax deductions. I often request for one myself if I am buying secondhand equipment for office use (eg printers, computer monitor etc). All is needed is to have the seller's signature, name and NRIC, the item sold and the sum which was paid for it.

Oh I see. So for all the pro photogs this is required for submitting income tax. Any one required a similar statement in writing that the seller did not obtained the item for sales in an illegal manner? :)

I can imagine that if you're a secondhand dealer or a pawnshop owner that would be important. Otherwise you can be accused of fencing stolen property.

not if you bought the item/s in good faith.
