I have keen interest in photography and want to start learning. My friend offers to sell his FM2 and MF normal lens 50mm at S$700. They are about 7 years old and he had maintained it well. I have a budget thus would like to know if this is a reasonable price to pay. Thanks for the advice :)

I think a few days ago an FE2 just went out for $300 ?
and MF 50mm [f /1.4? ] should not cost $400 if its 7 y.o.

FE2 is easier to use but also quite good for beginner.

bought my FM2 recently from a second hand dealer for $380. great funtional condition but cosmetically was definitely not mint. spent the whole night cleaning it up. those in mint condition would cost much more. TCW had 2 for sale at 450 and 500 respectively.
i believe there were some 50mm MF lenses for sale here previously. eg,http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37311&highlight=nikon+50mm+manual
just do a search for 'nikon 50mm manual'
hope it helps.

If he/she is a friend, then it really doesn't matter how much it costs right? Or just tell him/her how much you can afford and see if your price can be matched. I thinking reasonable condition FM2 and 50mm lens should cost about $600-650.

But if you are thinking of starting from scratch and basic, and if you don't really need to buy from your friend, then I would really recommend either buying two prime lenses such as 35mm wide and a 85mm or 105mm short tele as a start. Forget the 50mm as a starting lens because you are really limited in what you can do. Or you can get get a standard range zoom, eg, 28-85, that should be good too.

I've a FE2 in top condition and also can bundle with a 50mm manual lens. Both item inside electronic drybox and taken out to chank the shuttle once in a while. It also has a honeycomb shuttle. You can do some research on this. If you're interested, pse pm me your best price you can offer. Thanks
