yes it can be the same...until you drill into the wall then you know the difference.
normal spinning at hammer mode will not have any effect unless you feed in to the wall.
It all depends on how often you are going to use them. If you are going to drill say 3x-10x a year, why bother to pay for something so expensive. Power and price and whether it is chuck or chuckless play very little part to it. The most important thing to ask is how long before the drill will become a permanent resident in the store room?
I like to share some of the pointers dicuss in this thread

b. Dont be too over excited about the drill bit supplied in the packaging. They are not as good as those with tungsten carbide tip?
c. Drill vs hammer? Hammer is like "punching", good for concrete. But remember, hammer also worn the drill bit as well. So make sure get a good one.
OK, now for the brands
Black and Decker are the consumer brand. Good enough for normal household use. Cheap and good. If you want the professional version, then get DeWalt. Both are made in China. Except DeWalt is more expensive.
Makita is another long and reliable brand. Have been around for ages. Green one for consumer use, blue one for industrial use.
Hitachi - also another reliable brand.
I prefer Panasonic, but cannot get it here in Singapore. Very popular in the US.
As for places to get them, I suggest Rochor Centre. There is a hardware shop which is just above the car park entry of the underground car park. Next to the CD shop. Very popular among the main contractors. You can also get excellent drill bits for them.

I used to use Bosch for work, very reliable. Drills through walls with a drill bit big enuff to pull 3 coxial cables through anything from 5 times to 40 times a day, 6 days a week .. plus the usual drilling for screws, etc. In spite of the heavy usage, it did not spoil for the 1 yr I used it. :sweat:
If you're getting one, get at least 700W or greater. The low wattage one do not have enough power and damage the drill bit more easily; even the big drill bit breaks. This happens to a few of my colleagues who were using the 500W ones until they switched over to the 800W or 850W ones..

Please look out for pressure sensitive variable speed on the trigger. VERY helpful to use as a screwdriver. I have a friend on a POWERFUL drill who has no variable speed. Ended up drilling a hole through his furniture with the drill and screw rather than to tighten the screw!
Canew, dont think you will need to use very othen right? (since when you had became so hands on? :think: ) When you need it I can lend you mine if it only for a few occasional use.
Cyber monkey, I might be wrong about the quick release bits for the model that Canew mention but I had used heavy duty "Hilti" drill that required special bit. Unlike normal drill bits that is onlt a smooth shaft, this special bit have a slot to lock into the drill. Its meant for fast removal and replacement of the drill bit.

chuck- simply tie it to the cable cord at the middle with cable tie
chuck- better. safer. more secure. i don't want the drill bit to fly off halfway thru
variable speed- important. the lowest speed possible. this drill will double up as a screwdriver. unless u buy another electric screwdriver, else use hand. imagine u have 10 holes and 10 screws . very tiring
power handling. buy a reliable cheaper bigger power drill rather than cosmetically nice branded drill. or else it will take a hell of an effort to punch a hole

box- sturdy. after every drilling session, u get so pissed off. u will start to throw things ard

If you are drilling the ceiling of a HDB unit, a minimum power of 700W Drill is needed with hammer. I am using a 710W B&D and it drills through anything.
HDB ceilings is the most difficult to drill as it's really hard.
I am not sure if Homefix is still selling the package. I got mine few months ago a B&W 710 watts drill that comes free with a box of drill bits.....and I mean a WHOLE box of it. It even has alan key and screw drivers as well........PLUS on top of that it also give you a cordless electric screw driver. All that for $120.00.

Just go down to hardware shops around Rochor, Jalan Besar or Geylang and pick one. Much cheaper than buying from a place like Homefix. There are many brands to choose from, don't narrow you options to Bosch or B&D.
Most drills from popular brands work pretty much the same. I have a Makita that I got donkey years ago that still works fine today (don't even know the model) that sits in the storeroom most of the time. So I'd recommend the cheapest one that gets the job done.

Actually they do. Most general contractors in Singapore have switched to DeWALT power tools last two years (according to Mr Steven Ang of Robert Bosch SEA). You will notice more Bangladesh workers holding the 'black and yellow" drill now.
