Is it worth buying at 2k+?
Please advise :thumbsup::)

leica m8 are approaching 3k sgd in the US. So I would weigh between RD1 and M8.

cheers!

I guess it depends on the condition of the camera - how used, etc. But yeah, you can get an M8 for slightly more than S$3k, even in Europe.

If one can get a M8 at around 3K, it might be well worth the extra few hundred dollars for the added resolution etc. Though one would have to invest in UV/IR filters.

Rds1 is not easy to repair or get technical support.

If u have $2k for rd1s, do seriously buying an m2 m3 m4 or m6. That is full frame and all you need. Film is fun and worth learning.

Ive been shooting digital RF and frankly i think analogue film RF is better.

That will depend on who you know.... The Epson R-D1/s/x is easily serviced and most of the problems reported are usually minor. Turn around from Epson itself is not as long too.

I'm an Epson user. Had many opportunities for sub S$3000 M8 for quite some time now, but the Epson won me over for various reasons.

1. Value (not price)

2. Reliability

3. Higher ISO performance

4. Manual selection of framelines

5. Does not need expensive UV/IR filters

I can afford the M8/M9, but I can't afford the hassle. Hence I stayed with the Epson for digital RF, which functions well for what it is suppose to do. For some strange reason, there's not much love for the Epson here, probably due to it's less than glorious pedigree. In a lot of other places, it's actually quite a cult camera.

In my opinion, the price of 2K+ is still a great buy for the Epson today, and possibility for up to another year more. Sell it then and you won't lose too much, if any at all. The older Epson R-D1 can be had for under 2K and with the software upgrade, it's basically a R-D1s. I'm sure you already know that the Sony NEX also has a 1.5X Crop sensor and can mount all the LTM/M lenses and more.

But if there's a Leica whore somewhere inside you, then you already know the answer.

Cheers,

In my opinion to pay $2K+ for an R-D1s is a bit too high, I think a fair price should be around $1800. The R-D1/s is a good camera if you get a good copy without issues, it has been my backup RF for a while. As I like to shoot wide (ie. 24~28mm), the crop factor of 1.5x make my choice of lenses rather limited.

I love the way the rd1s starts up and the shooting workflow with the advance lever, which is different from the M8 / M9.

the rd1s is one of those cameras that I regretted selling. You should be able to get 1 for less than S$2k, iirc, dead pixels on the lcd is quite a common problem, do look out for the actuations too!

1 thing I really like the RD1 series is the ccd itself, it was the same as my very first DSLR, which was Nikon D100, and the reason is they both produce file that look most film like among all digital camera, especially in b/w, even M8 or M9 couldn't do this.

So in short If you're not going to print your images any bigger than A3 and you like the classic film look than this is the camera for you.
