When using with the 18-135, should be using towards the tele end. Magnification increase with increase in lens focal length for diopter. Magnification = (focal length x diopter value)/1000 hence at 125mm, mag = (125 x 8)/1000 = 1x and at 50mm, mag = (50 x 8)/1000 = 0.4x
