Raynox DCR-250 Macro Conversion Lens Review

I'm using the Raynox 250 with my 50mm prime lens and it does yield some decent result, feel free to check out some of the pics i have taken using this combination.

Don't mind my posting a pic here...

If a 1:1 magnification given by a dedicated macro lens is not enough, using Raynox lenses can help to get that extra bit of modification.

The above pic was taken with DCR-250 + DCR-150 stacked on Sigma 150mm macro lens.

One thing though, focusing is extremely difficult & it's good to have live view to aid focusing in this case :sweat:

You'll need a step-up ring for your 18-55mm lens. 49mm to 52mm or 49mm to 55mm will do the job.

The Raynox Universal Adapter will snap onto any filter thread of 52mm to 67mm

How well will this work on nikon 55-300? I've read reviews that it does not focus well (vignetting at 55-200 range)

well i tried it on my 55-300, it does vignet frm 55-200, but its veri acceptable a 135-200 coz slightly vignett and u cn crop away. Focus wise it is advisable to manual focus no matter which lens u mount the raynox250 to. hope this help

not really, i can still af with 18-55 IS, 50mm 1.8, & 100L...

why would you need a dcr250 when you already have a macro lens? raynox acts more like a magnifying glass, you are better off trying with a magnifying glass in front, cheaper too...

Raynox 250 is a high quality 3 element lens that is compensated for astigmatism, distortion and spherical aberration.

Does a magnifying glass perform all the above?

FAQ:

Q: What's the min focus distance?
A: Depending on which lens you put the raynox on. Diff lens diff min focus distance. For my 18-55 kit lens it's around 8cm.

Q: How much is it?
A: Around $120ish SGD for a brand new one.

You mean, after attaching the raynox to 50mm, the min. focus distance will become 8cm? IIRC, the min. distance for the 50mm is 0.45m.

May I ask where did you bought your raynox?

Pardon my intrusion. Some stuff I would like to suggest as corrections.

Minimum Focusing Distance
Minimum focusing distance does not depend on focal length. It depends on the dioptre rating; in this case, the Raynox DCR-250 is a +8.
Minimum focusing distance = 1000/dioptre = 12.5cm.

Magnification
Magnification of subject is dependant on focal length of the lens, i.e. 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 300mm, etc. A 100mm lens with a +8 (Raynox 250) will yield a bigger magnification than a 50mm lens with a +8.
Magnification of subject is also dependant on dioptre rating. A 50mm lens with a +8 will yield a bigger magnification than a 50mm lens with a +4.

Depth Of Field
Depth of field is dependant on focal length AND focusing distance. This doesn't apply to macro only. It's a lens characteristic.
Basically, the closer you focus, the thinner the depth of field.
The longer your lens focal length, the thinner the depth of field.
