Hi. I'm new, and would like a ask something.
What is the difference between shooting in RAW and JPEG?
And I heard some people prefer to shoot in RAW - or is that even true?
If it is so, why do they prefer RAW?

I'm sorry if my questions sound stupid... but thanks.

Hi PyeeL

Each has their own advantages. RAW has more information captured in each file, but larger file size and potentially more tedious post processing.

A few threads recently that discussed regarding raw

Hey thanks Ryan!
One more thing, are RAW files larger than JPEG's?

If you try a google search for "RAW vs JPEG" you'll find a lot of information. RAW is the raw data straight from the sensor. JPEG is post-processed and compressed. So a JPEG file can be 5-10x smaller than a RAW file, but at the expense of detail and dynamic range headroom.

Depending on the confidence and size available at hand for the photog, he may choose to shoot in RAW for like important shoots as it may be a saving grace in case you get the WB wrong or something... Personally i shoot in RAW as I don't wanna go home and find that the picture wasn't what I hoped for in JPEG format. But of course I do hope for the day that with experience I can confidently shoot JPEG with space for more pictures! =D

yes larger size

Okay, that sounds like time for a larger CF card for me.
Thanks for the info Ryan and kae(if I can call you that).

For me, I shoot RAW for more freedom in PP.With a good software like Adobe Camera Raw, I tempted to try out RAW instead of Jpeg and I never turned back since. To me, if you want good image quality, shoot RAW.If shooting friends and all, I shoot Jpeg. ;)

Ok thanks screamed for the tip. I think I'll be trying out RAW with Adobe soon.

It's just the size of the file, JPEG is compressed = less space taken
