Rates for commercial product shoots

Anyone knows how much does it cost to do product photography for commercials?

How to they normally charge us?

really depend on the regularity of the work.

and the no. of products.

Some say they charge by hr and some by product number. Having problems diffrentiating which is which.

There are also kinds which just require products to be taken in volume on a white background, others which need some touch up and modelling.

Hope to find out what the standard rates for these kinda shoots are. Thanks.

Had a client before that had 300-500 products to shoot a day, about 2-3 times / week. Only 4-5 hours to shoot per day... that one I couldn't charge by product.. So can only do by hour and gave a discount due to the volume.

How much do you usually charge per hour for such shoots? As in those few hundred products type, roughly.

Fotographer, There are no guides or benchmark for pricing of photographic jobs here. For example, in the medical field, SMA provides a pricing guide for short, long consultations, etc. Most GP adopts them. However, in the area of specialists, it is very different. If you are hotshot cosmetic surgeon, your fees can be many times that of a 'normal' cosmetic surgeon. This analogy is for illustration only. The photography industry here is very much like that of 'medical specialists'.

The problem is, the moment someone write down the rate here, then there will be someone else who will use this "rate" as a benchmark and try to undercut it or so.

Small/ Big volume of products - no need to set up explicitly, go by the number of product

Small/ Big volume of products - specific lighting setup, explicit look requirement, go by the hour.

Hope it's helpful :)

Thanks guys, all replies have been useful. Ill see how it goes depends on the situation.

i would probably charge them according to my estimate of their budget.
never let a wealthy company off with a cheap quotation

Heard enough of clients saying 'we have very low or, worse still, no budget for this job' !

Other than the fact that different photographers of different skills will quote differently, you also have the issue that every job is specific. The more questions the photographer asks beforehand, the better he can quote for the job.

Imagine someone calls you up and ask you to shoot 10 products. How would you quote? If you gave a average quote and it turned out to be a simple carton box against a paper background shoot, congrats. What if the client later informed you that the shoot was for crystal vase, flowing liquid, food and car, and every shot must be done on a different set-up? If he held you to your quote, you'd be pretty much dead because it'll easily take a week to do everything right. So ask as much questions about the job before submitting a quote, and that's one of the reasons why there's no standard rate... because there's no such thing as a standard job!

And most of the time... when the client says... it's a "simple" shoot... either ask lots of questions immediately... or run to a distant galaxy far far away!

May I add on to your view ? Even for the same job, two or more different photographers may quote differently.

what you could do is charge based on per day rate.. since it's hundreds of items.. then go by per day..
if the client is stingy, give a very low day rate.. eg. $500

then charge them based on loading/license. eg, If usage for web only then extra $500

if usage for local printing.. $600. if web and local print $1100.. if global printing then extra $400 on top of local printing..

then let them know that you need a copy media and/or URL of the web. also let them know that infringement of copyrights amount up to $x,xxxx PER IMAGE. and of course your T&C would have to state that if copyright infringement, they would have to pay for your legal fees, etc.

then also. you may wanna include that by 30 days, if payment is not made and images are used. it would be considered as copyright infringement... (one of the ways I make sure that my client pays on time.)

then if they want to buy the copyrights, then charge them $4000? maybe $10 per image or $50 per image? whatever it is..

just my 2 cents.
^^^^^^^^^^ <- note this..

The business of editorial photography here is notoriously characterised by s l o w payment and, if I may add, they are not alone.
