Something interesting that I found on adobe's website, applicable to Photoshop CS4 and CS5

[Photoshop][ Windows ] [ Maximum amount of RAM that Photoshop can use ]
[ 32-bit ] [ 32-bit ] [ 1.7 GB ]
[ 32-bit ] [ 64-bit ] [ 3.2 GB ]
[ 64-bit ] [ 64-bit ] [ as much RAM as you can fit into your computer ]
