R-D1(s) in Singapore?

For those of us who are 'spoilt' by the ease and speed of autofocus, manual focusing would be really slow and could result in loss of lots of photo opportunities. :(

Thanks for the prompt reply, regit. I've no experience with a rangefinder before, only managed to view it from shops. Would like to give it a try but afraid it's not my thing. Is it hard to focus manually making use of the centre mirror?

As noted by Terrence, that's the RF patch. Indeed, RF may not be for everyone else. But once you get the hang of it, it is actually pretty straight-forward. I started photography with a DSLR and pickup my first RF mid-last-year... long story short, sold my D2h and D2x (though kept a D70) and got a couple more RFs :)

In terms of focusing, I find RFs to be really good at low light stuff. Focusing with the RF increases the accuracy over DSLR in those situations. This extend to wide-angle stuff as well (ever try to focus with certainty with wide angle lens?). Interestingly, RFs have also the best lenses for these areas as well (for Leica case, the Noct, the luxs come to mind). Good mechanics as well when compared to SLR in such cases (no black-out, less vibration).

In terms of general daylight usage, hyper-focal settings will actually be faster than AF. AF lenses these days don't even come with HF scales anymore

I'm of course, very bais in my view since I've made the change... so take it with a grain of salt :)

So, is there a confirmed estimate for this camera's street price yet?

Hmm.. I'm guessing I asked a pretty dumb question. Oops. Sorry. Hahaha. :bsmilie:

The R-D1s is such a niche camera that there is only a 'take it or leave it' price. No such thing as a 'street' price, I'm afraid. :(

Hi,

Anyone knows where I might be able to rent a R-D1/s for a weekend ?

To be frank, with enough practice, one can get a shot faster on the Leica RF than the Canon 1 series. The trick is to pre-focus your shots and if you have to look into viewfinder to focus all the time, you're not using the RF to the fullest potential.

Sorry to poke my head in, but can't you pre-focus manually on the Canon 1 series?

Sure, I do that on canon lenses too, but I still need to look at the marking to know the distance.

On the M lenses, there's a little tab that when pointing downwards, you're set at 5ft / 1.5m. Using that as a reference, I can basically gauge the distance w/o looking at the lenses.

The techinique is described here:

Can anyone please tell me the diference between R-D1s and R-D1 ?
I like to try with RF and looking for a second hand R-D1 to start?
Also which leica lens should I first get? Please help. :)
A Happy CNY to all.

Does anyone know if CP or other shops are still selling the Epson RD1s? If so, what is the current selling price?

only 2nd hands in the singapore market... recently someone selling off a rd1 for a very good price.

Edited due to old information.

The RD-1 is a unique experiment. Lets hope that it doesn't say as one forever. Buying a $8k camera that has known problems doesn't sit well with me.

Quite a few on Ebay.

I was going by the prices at B&H here.

Does it mean that Leica M lenses are actually cheaper in Singapore than in the States?

Well, from my experiences, Leica lenses, including filters (especially the UV/IR filters) are a lot cheaper from B & H than Cathay's prices, even with all the courier charges and GST customs charges here when arrive in Singapore, it's still cheaper. Usually, B & H will have the latest in stock first than any others, especially the UV/IR filters for M8. Those using M8 will know what I meant. Waiting for those lenses and filters is an agony sometimes. :)

Orders from B & H arrives here in Singapore in just a few days, so not too bad.
