fyi OP doesn't carry the 1204 but they only have the 1205. they say that they didn't get the 1204 coz its not much diff in terms of stability but its shorter n more compact.
i also tried the triopo carbon fiber tripods. GT-128 and GT-228. its probably the cheapest carbon fibers u can get in the market now. the GT-128 goes for $250 and the bigger one $290.
however in terms of stability i realli can't tell much of a diff b/w the sirui and triopo with just testing them once. ONLY i feel that the triopo ones the twist lock thing doesn't sound very right coz either theres sand inside or the grease has some small particles and u hear some friction when u turn but it doesn't affect the lock much. maybe i'm just a lil paranoid.
for the triopo head its only $95 (with universal plate, they dont have dedicated ones) for 8kg with 33mm diameter ball. however its not that secure for larger setups. i tried it with D300 + grip + tamrom 17-50. at the 60 deg angle its not so secure and the sweet spot's resistance and smoothness can't compare to photoclam coz thats the onli other head i tried with my setup.
Sirui is going for around 400? at least thats the price for OP. Triopo for 250 or 285 for the one that can convert one of the legs into monopod. they do not have any stocks for the triopo GT-128 with a leg able to convert to monopod.
not too sure whether the extra 100+ is justifiable for the sirui. maybe those who swept all their triopo tripods at the manda photo SITEX booth could shed some light!

I didn't play with the tripod for long but first impression is so. The twist lock is a little less comfortable to get firm grip on than Gitzo but it definitely feels better than Benro. I looked at the 5-section tripod and the last section is much thicker than the GT1541T, which does instill more confidence in the stability and built. It is of greater height too

anw so how do u get ard the allen key plate issue? so u have to bring the allen key out everything u use screw on the plate?
nah. i got so fed up with it, i just bought the tripod without the head. ;p
alright i'm gonna get out whether i get fed up by it too! so wad head are u using with it now? i'm more concerned that other tripod heads doesn't close perfectly. :thumbsd:

using the benro KS-1. but if you want to keep the weight down, then go with the sirui g10 standard ballhead. the benro ballhead is really bigger and it makes it harder to zip up the sirui-supplied tripod bag.
haha in the end i got the G-20 + N1205 Sirui tripod for $475.
think its really a lot better in terms of stability and silky smoothness after comparing with triopo. the locks are also more controlled and can be deployed really smoothly.
Got the G-20 instead of the G-10 since i'm using a D300 + grip and feels a bit flimsy on the G-10. although i feel that the G-20's sweet spot and smoothness can't match markins or photoclam for sure. but i guess u get wad u pay.
in conclusion it feels like i have a good tripod n head for travelling without burning a hole in my pocket. however this is only the start perhaps it wont last? i dunno also.
anw the salesperson i met this time was some young chap. really helpful and patient although there's another guy buying gitzo and markins beside me.

Just a quick check with fellow users of the N1205, does the legs of your tripod seems a bit loose and u can actually shake it abit when it's extended but not fastened?
Is this a norm? I'm a bit paranoid that I might have "over" load tested my copy resulting in the "loose" feel of the legs.

Me too, just joined the Sirui family....I was at TK last saturday and was about to spring for the Gitzo Traveller series range when the nice folks introduced me to the alternative and showed me features well beyond what the Gitzo could offer at half the price. Build quality was fantastic and with 6 years warranty, who's to complain?
I sprung for that and added the markins M10 ball head....my RRS L plate should be here any time soon... and my combo costs approximately 1.1k! Fantastic savings over the initial combo of the Gitzo package!
Of course with the savings, it went into the elinchrom quadra...but that is another different story....lol

Seems like the Sirui N1204 is getting good feedback. It can't be all good. For those who have purchased it, please provide feedback where you think can be better. I am also looking at getting one.

lol, i thought i recognized a few CS-ers.... nice seeing you! I've frequented TK photo a total of 3 times for my 5d mk ii, thinktank and the tripod...i think i will frequent the place a lot more, as i really like the service compared to the alternatives. No regrets getting the tripod at all! The other place where i've seen stock Sirui tripods is over at John....and i will never get my stuff from there
@manwearpants why don't you go down to TK yourself to compare between the N1204 and the Gitzo equivalent, it's best to see the build and construction yourself.
Initially I was set on buying the Gitzo(only want Gitzo) until I saw for half the price, I was getting a lot more of a better deal with the monopod feature, sturdy construction and the capability to transform to the Macro set up a lot more efficiently....Might I add at half the price of the Gitzo

I just got myself a R-2204 which is similar spec with N-2204 but without the monopod function. It only cost $230 without the ballhead. With saving of $200 for not getting N serie, I can get a decent monopd.
The built quality is really solid and it is very light at only 1.3kg.
Pls consider this if you are getting N-2204.
