Yup, I understand what catchlight is trying to say now... The shutter speed is set according to the metering of the current ambient lights...

Maybe I should have phrased my question as "is it possible to set a faster minimum shutter speed"? I think the answer is NO for the D80... What about other models like D300?

The slowest speed when using flash should range from 1/60 to 30s. IIRC

Flash sync speeds should be from 1/250s to 1/60s.

If you need a higher shutter speed when using flash, set the first to 1/60 minimum and the sync speed at 1/250s (Auto FP). Note this Auto FP will only work if the flash used is not the onboard flash and CLS compatible.
