Queenstown - A Short Series

Queenstown is one of the early housing estates in Singapore, built before Toa Payoh and Ang Mo Kio, and was a test bed for much of Singapore's public housing.
It was also Singapore's first satellite town.

A place full of heritage and more well known to the elder generation, many of the blocks have already been scheduled for the en bloc scheme.
Amenities and shops around the area have already been closed or moved to a new location.

A prominent building that still stands is the Queenstown Cinema and Bowling alley.
Built in 1977 and closed in 1999, the cinema, reached its peak in the late eighties.
The building is expected to be demolished by late 2011 to give way to new development of Queenstown and Commonwealth.

By March 2011, most residents and shopkeepers have already moved out of the blocks.
Modern studio apartments for the elderly are due to replace the old blocks of flats.

Shophouses and coffeeshops there have ceased operations.

Nice series and narrative!

lol ya i live very close by, usually never notice. it is true now alot of queenstown being rebuilt. dun shoot now, later cannot shoot liao lol. maybe someday can do outing here. can get cheap tiger beer i know where can buy heh

Despite the evident redevelopment of the area, some still choose to work and stay till the end.
To those who have spent most of their life staying in the area, it is indeed hard to bid it goodbye.

nice Queenstown series!
Keep them coming...

Thanks for the simple and informative writeup . This is indeed one of few nostalgic places to shoot. For those who wish to shoot there, dont forget the library and the multi storey carpark, both are very nice structures. I did my first film shoot here.

Commonwealth Avenue Cooked Food Centre

Situated behind the cinema, it was a convenient place with provided affordable and palatable fare for residents as well as movie goers.
Many of the familar faces, sight and food have become a part of a memory of the residents who lived in that area.
