Quality issues with the 17-55?

Just wonder how to know if the IS breakdown?

IS unit starts to vibrate a little more violently than before, images taken have motion blur associated with the axis of vibration. you'll definitely know if you've been using the lens.

I had the chance to play around with my friend's 17-55 today. Focusing ring is so tiny  That lens is shaaaaaarrrpppp! Much sharper than my 24-70 :( It makes me wanna buy one. Does anyone know if the IS breakdown issue still exists in the latest batch? How long does it take before the IS usually break down? The warranty is only one year...

Hi guys! Does anyone know the link to the current price lists for this lens please?

if your used to 24-70, then you can live with 17-55 IS with IS turned off. use it only when you need it to save the IS' lifespan. just like what im doing with my 24-105, thou no known IS issues.

Hi Guys,

Just called CSC and was told replacing of IS is about $150+/- .Tightening of Zoom + servicing is about $80.
IS is very delicate and was advice to be more careful not to knock the lens with IS on when mounted on camera.
It applies to all IS lens by the way.

But i assume it will be free in case if lens is still under warranty?
Thinking to get one.

Zoom creep. Common with zoom lenses. Even L lenses will have zoom creep.

Go to CSC before the end of your warranty and ask them to tighten it. It is FOC. That is all you can do unless you don't use it at all...
I just went down there on Monday to tell them about zoom creep. They say the lens design is like that and they cannot do anything to solve it. :(

huh? that's rather contradictory. then what abt the "tightening" services in the previous post? the lens creep but got no lock function sian right? i've read that the 15-85 creeps too on the POTN forum. 2 users were complaining abt it already, but its not an issue to them. i guess "the lens design is like that" too.

Last time i got similar creep in my 150-500mm zoom lens. Although lens ring was very tight (need energy to zoom in/out) but still lens move in-out while walking.
I think this should be problem with all zoom lens, pull/push lens also got similar issue?

Great replies, folks. Keep 'em coming! Thanks! :)

Then you tell them you want the lens to go back to the condition when you first bought it. That is, it didn't "automatically" extend to the max. length when you point the lens downward.

I will go back again when the warranty is going to expire. :)

Apparently CSC informed they may need to replace some rubber ring or something to tighten the zoom ring + servicing of the lens to remove dust + general checking. Cost +/-$80.

Yes the 17-55 does creep a lot when your body is facing down, even more so with the hood on. One of the reasons why I keep my BG-E7 on all the time is so that the body won't face down when I am neck slinging it.

I am thinking of getting this lens until i read this thread, thanks to TS.:)

That sounds super duper heavy! :)

17-55 is superb. construction of lens, although plastic, is of high quality. the construction definitely can't be compared to a L lens.. although the image quality is highly comparable.

for a lens of this range offering f/2.8, this lens is possibly the best option you have. and it's a pretty darn good option at that.
