I'm looking for a simple dry box to store DSLRs. Anyone has any suggestions on the price range and places to look for one?

=)

Just came back from PS Carrefour. They having offer for dry box. It's $24.95 I think. Comes with a pack of "reusable" silica gel. I'm also wondering if I should get that or save up for a dry cabinet.

I'm not sure. I used to have a dry box which uses silica gel. But then moisture still got in and fungus started growing on my lens.

Is the reusable gel in the ball capsule format? How is it reusable?

eh..they say microwave it. dunno if it works

O.o thk god i didnt buy it. Still using a lock and lock.
BTW...i'm no bro eh

Bro never microwave silica gel....i tried it once and it turn permanent pink......and spoil.....:D

What's wrong with it? I have the drybox (the iCase Drybox) and I microwave the silica pack all the time. I've done it well over 10 times already.

The only problem with the drybox is that efficiency decreases over time, by which humidity will creep up, and you'd have to microwave it again.

Still, my drybox has never gone past 60% before, so I guess its fine.

I have a used panasonic drybox (silica) much like the icase that I leave in the office and don't use much. If you want you can collect it from me at Raffles Place.

Cheers.

I bought a drybox at Cathay Photo for $31, sorry don't remember model or name. It's quite small though, only enough for my 400D and 2 lens. With hygrometer and vacuum-sealed.

Another forummer would like to take my drybox if you're not interested. Do you need it or can I give it away?

i used to buy new ones and pour in but upgraded to digi cabi recently:D

I stated out using tupperware and silica gel in the 70's (there were no dry box or cabs then).

In the late 80's I "upgraded" to 5 large and 1 small dry boxes (the transparent plastic ones) which cost a small fortune.

After I got married, in the mid 90's my wife got fedup of me spendind the whole nite either frying or microwaving the silica gel and hinted that a dry cab is what i needed. She figured that a $800 is well worth the time wasted, not forgetting that i also spends nites on the car

I went out and got a double doored tolihan dri cab almost as tall as i m :D

Bottom line they all work if used properly. Dry cab the best, most convinent and virtuely idot proof but be ware it needs POWER. My stupid someone switched off the elec point once

get a dry cabinet, a small one costs less than 100 and you dont have to worry about humidity or when to bake your silica gel. a simple dry box would cost 25 dollar, tighten your belt for one month, save up another 60-70 dollars for peace of mind. it's a long term investment and worth every cents that you have spent for it considering you photographic equipment cost.

Sorry sis.....he....he.....

Heys..not a prob.
BTW, another qns. Is it alright to fry/microwave/dry all kinds of silica gel or is it only do-able for certain ones?
