When i was there we only had 1 thursday training it was suppose to be night movement IIRC... briefing n then practical.... but my ps just theory then he say ok go back to bunk!:bsmilie:

my brain getting old liao.. cannot remember that much.
used to be very highly inhabited, probably at max had abt 8k residents on that island itself.
mostly along the area above ladang camp. i forgot that road name already.. P-something..
a lot of fishermen and a there was even a goldsmith on the island then. sundry stores etc.
big fire broke out once, and killed many.
historically, by legend, there was a battle between the sulawesi and the europeans (portuguese i think), in the sea between tkong and singapore, near serjahat. of course the europeans won cuz of fire power, and apparently the sulawesi did not want to surrender, suicided instead. this is as per writtein in the book abt serjahat/tekong.
another piece of history was that there was always an old malay man seen rowing a boat from tekong to serjahat, and one day someone tailed him and reached serjahat to realize the old man went missing. (serjahat is really small! and a small little hill).
when i was there, in the middle of the place up the hill's the Datuk/(Na Toh Kong) shrine, a large piece of rock wrapped with yellow cloth etc. Went to pray/make some offerings. Super windy whenever i tried lighting the candles though. the shrine faces tekong/ladang camp exactly. From TFT, jetty the prayer room, the window can see serjahat and the shrine.
lots of bunkers there, lots of graffiti on the walls, quite amazing for a tiny little island.
now no more parents visiting day alreadi lah... when i was an instructor almost 3 yrs back they already change the system exactly 14 days recruit get their first book out already doesn't matter what day it is... basically you can go there when you either send your son for NS and see his POP..
Anyways i heard alot of stories on Unum as well.. also managed to find some foundations of a house (left with the cemented base only) while doing navigation exercise while in SISPEC.

yah from records, the island really small, maybe the old man knows of some secret passage way to go underground? Since it was a British outpost once, im not surprised the ang mohs did dig some underground bunker or something there. (most British ww2 installations have some sort of underground facility)
it's a pity, it was completely flattened (correct?). There was some website which someone had visited Serjahat and took a few photos of the island and buildings on it, but i have not seen any of the shrine. That must be really interesting. :thumbsup:

hmm? people dont usually get that lost in the mangrove swamp arnd unum. i've never been lost at the unum area.
most people get lost near the reservoir mangrove area. and there's an area of forest which is so thick and dark that it resembles a little like late evening if you're stuck inside. one of my bmt mates, went OCS, came to tkong for navex exercise, was given a blind map (fake), got lost there and was so scared that he decided to take a swim to tekong kerchil with his rifle cuz he thought he saw people on tekong kerchil. almost got charged. went OOC though.
arnd the reservoir, many people who navigated the island always got lost, and keep circling the place. :bsmilie: there's another juncture where a wrong turn, you enter a super old muslim cemetry. kinda disguised, long grass, but you can see the little headstones etc.
i navigated tekong at least 4 times, longest exercise was 2.5 days navigation, cuz that time SARS, cannot go taiwan, replaced the 4 day navax with a 2.5day one.
i think the scariest thing abt tekong is not the ghosts... its the spiders!!! EEEEEEEW

i think the shrine should still be there, after all, many go there to pray for safety for every batch of intake. i was good friends with former hd trg in hq bmt, went with him twice to pray.
i'm also v good friends with encik kumar, one of the SAF retirees working with ntuc foodfare last time, he was on the island for 18 years, and by now probably 22 years already. heard a lot from him. he drinks stout like water though :bsmilie: always go mess and chat chat.
regarding the old malay man, that was way before world war 2, even before world war 1

so its actually a published book? for a moment i thought is those hand written history passed down from ancestor to ancestor, and someone is keeping it as family heirloom type. Keke

shhh i actually wrote in to SPI abt serjahat years ago, i fed them info about half the write up though. but told them i would prefer to remain anonymous
the canteen 2 uncle is the caretaker, as a kid till now an old man, he had dreams from the deity on the shrine etc. annual grass cutting, the wayang shows etc, is arranged by him.
there was another account related to me on first hand account, regarding someone's visit to serjahat, and the incidents etc. but shall let that remain a secret

yes its published. the book was part of the research when some taiwanese generals decided to take a visit to tekong and presentation material on the history of the island was done in chinese ;(
hahaha when i shifted hq from the old building to the new building, the strong room was full of stuff too ;p but less on history, more on plans n etc.

Aiyah nothing to be ashamed of, it's oredi rare for people to have profound knowledge of singapore's past. Nowadays, everything very fast gone without trace, it's good to know singapore's history, something to tell children in future. :thumbsup:

We also had nite training but we were not Tekong natives. But my sarge made a statement to the effect that we shd not have it by rite.
Anyway, my old commando camp is just as bad to a certain extent. The back part of the camp is very eerie. It always gives us a very uncanny feeling. That was before my platoon sarge who was a regular told us that he actually saw a lady at the bk of the bldging. He fell sick after that.

i was from the new BMTC on tekong.. we once had field camp on top of one of the 'hills'.. close to midnight, there was a heavy downpour and we were rushed down the 'hill' to one of the old camps.. camp 1 or 3, cant remember.. once at the bottom, we were directed to the old medical center to wait out the rain... imagine a whole company inside the dark old medical center trying to sleep.. about 2 hours later.. the PC,OC and encik woke everyone up and shifted all of us outside the medical center to under some verandah located away from the medical center... where we slept till 5am plus..
though i did not bother at that time as i was tired.. i recall someone mentioning some days later that someone else detected the scent of frangi pani.. to be safe, they moved us out into the open rather than in the dark medical center.. that night, we were told to go toilet or anywhere in minimum number of 2 recruits

They always say no Pork in tekong camp. But i remember when my parent came to visit me during the second week. They brought me Bak Kwa leh....hahaha...then i kept it in my cupboards for a few days. No idea anything happened to my bunkmate anot cos i was admitted to the medical centre that day.
Lots of freaky stories but are they really true?
