This has been at the back of my mind for some time, and I was thinking of compiling a coffee table book of our local photographers with photographs taken by local folks here using Leica equipment. Book run numbers will be very small.

I'm gauging interest in the project and it will comprise very simple points like:

1) Professionally designed (may have some short blurb with each photograph)
2) Project Committee to determine what goes in (3-5 members meeting on a fortnightly basis) since art/interpretation can be highly subjective
3) List of Styles like Portraiture, Landscape, Abstracts, etc (to be determined by the Project Comm)

Not sure whether this is feasible, but I'm just sounding out members who may want to indicate their interest or give their comments.

Sound fun! I'll buy a copy! Support! Support!

Cheers,

I don't have a Leica, but I would like to bring forward some questions/suggestions.

Since the book is going to be a compilation of photos taken by our local photographers with Leica equipment, why not infuse a sort of "local flavour" into the book, if you will call it. Like usually you see those coffee table books of pictures of a certain country, ie China, France, USA. Usually those books are full of pictures of landscapes, rivers, mountains, but "our book" could showcase Singapore, our society, our way of life, our cuisine, our culture etc.

For example, the chapters could be named:

Chapter 1: Buildings (Maybe can have pics of buildings that are unique to Singapore's history)

Chapter 2: People (For this we could have street shots of the different classes of people going about in their everyday life, like bankers, hawkers, students, workers etc)

Chapter 3: Food (Nuff said)

Chapter 4: Arts/Culture (For this can take examples from the getai pics that Chiif took recently.)

Just what I could think of at the moment, cheers :)

why must be leica, I cannot afford leica woh...

Maybe you could consider going for a film only book, not just limited to rangefinders :)

I thought of just having it called RF, then again......just a thought.
i think that the RF idea is excellent!!

this could be a local RF development website, either in parallel or if the book turns out not to be too expensive to print... but not trying to de-rail the book idea... just a thought...

Excellent ideas! Maybe just put it on a web and from there, choose the best photos for print. I guess just RF is good enough, since we all shoot all sorts of combos, Leica or not.

I second that.

I can help with the layout ;)

I think pprobably upon completion we can send the high resolution working files around for DIY printing.

I wanna contribute.. but if its Leica only...den :(

Leica glass on non-leica body can? :embrass:

heading no where :(

why dont we start first by gathering all the Leica users?

or

all rangefinder user post 1 best shot, at least we can see where this book is heading.

actually dont really have to be leica... but film definitely.

I think restrict to Leica lens and film only will be a better idea. Maybe professional enough to get sponsor from the Leica. Just submit 1-2 photo from every user will get alot. Best Wishes.
Regards,

Regards,

That was my original intention, but the contirbutors' pool may be too small. Let's hear from more folks first.

We will be counting on you....... :bsmilie: .

How about using a book making service like blurb?
What kind of photos are you looking for, Photos of Singapore?

Thanks Hacker for coming up with the idea. I can see the enthusiasm. To start the ball rolling, we first must agree on a theme and then get the pool of photographs and then proceed from there. I am not an expert in publishing and this is the first time I am doing this, why not I list down the plan and the rest of you can add on. I foresee that there will be lots of ideas and suggestions, I too want this to be a "Open Source" project, but we have to agree on some basis to move forward. Otherwise, we will be just tossing ideas and keep changing direction and this will lead us no where. Would we all agree to this?

1. As Hacker suggested, the theme of this book will be Pictures by Range Finder.
- this do not limit to film, digital M8 & Epson RD1s also can.
- this do not limit to 35mm, Medium format RF also can. ie. Mamiya 6/7 Fuji GW670, 690... Rapid Omega or any Range Finder medium format cameras.
- this do NOT INCLUDE SLR or TLR. (If we want to do a Hassey or Rolleiflex, we should have enough photos to create a book just for that)

2. We will make use of flickr to host all the pictures and use the "comments" section as voting. Just like the current flickr pages, we will select the "BEST" 25 or 50 (number to be decided) pictures submitted by the photographers as the final print.

3. Each photographers can submit X number (to be decided) of photos. Photographs must include a short write up of the picture, long or short doesn't matter, but at least a short description of the picture & equipment used. NO need to include aperture/shutter/ISO or too technical detail information. Idea behind is not to come up with a technical manual, but a coffee table book people can enjoy the pictures and read about the story behind the picture.

4. No Geographical boundary. Pictures can be of Singapore/Malaysia/North Pole/Anywhere on earth. Underwater also can as long as taken by RF.

5. This project is NOT only open to clubsnap forumers only. People from other forum can also join. Those who are active in RFF can also invite them to join and we can post the coffee table book outside Singapore once it is ready.

6. We will open this to a specific time frame (to be decided). Each photo submitted to flickr should be at least 1024px width. If you want to put watermark also can. But personally I don't think it's necessary. Once the selected photos are finalised, high res file will be requested.

7. Once we have a pool of solid solid photographs, we will send it to print. Meanwhile, anyone got good "lobang" on publisher or anyone who want to sponsor, welcome too...

8. I am coming from a non-commercial angle. As people might know that I am a dealer for Voigtlander, I do not want this to be a promotional exercise for Voigtlander or Leica only. We are doing this for a spirit of fun.

That's all I can come up with now... anyone want to add more to this?

This is a great idea guys. I support this. Hope can be success. Furthemore I guess we don't have in our local bookstore publishing our local talent. Most of it oversea products.
