You're probably not doing something right then. NPNT. Also, please share what your course of action was during the shot.

Are you talking about night photos with people, or just night photography?

was taking moving cars...

was up in my room... so look down and started to shoot:D

i was using av mode... so i was controlling the aperture.. but could not control shutter...

is it normal?

U seriously need a tripod & set it to Tv instead. 1/60 - 1sec should be ok for the picture u are taking by using timer function or cable release if any... :)
If too dim ... juz increase the stops from 3/4 to 1 stop or more...good to try out these settings to get familiar with ur new toy
IS helps for night photography too :) but cost is a factor...

There are no hard and fast rules for exposure setting for night photography. But one thing is for certain: the blur is from camera shake. You need to rest it on something stable, or better still, on a tripod.

night photography....the below part will have some light but the top is always so dark

i always get this type whenever i use the night portrait function

a tripod will do you good :)

I agreed. Getting a tripod u can take lotsa nice night portraits.
As for the settings I mentioned earlier is juz a rough guide which I think can be set within few button pressed. If not satisfied juz change the stops or juz increase the shutter time to get the desire effect to ur eyes. However, if no cable release, timer function is second thing u need to consider upon. Some advance function (I dunno if 400D has it or not)
can flip the mirror up before shutter open & it is very useful for night shots to reduce camera shake due to the vibration caused by the flipping of the mirror.

400D does have mirror-lockup indeed. It is in one of the custom function. Just need to set it there. Thereafter, the first shutter press will lock up the mirror and the 2nd shutter press will open the shutter and take the picture. Very good mode to reduce shake, but then again, you will require a remote if you want to execute this well with the camera mounted on a tripod of course.

ya...but i will get the battery grip first before i use the tripod....coz the metal screw will scratch the bottom of my 400d (base)

I really don't get your reasoning. The metal screw will not scratch your 400D body's base if you handle it correctly.

You are complaining about shake problems, but putting off the purchase of a tripod.

As they say, no picture, no talk, and you still haven't showed us any night photos. What do you mean by

Hmm, thats one of the strangest reason I've heard to get a battery grip.

I'm not into night photography, but I think that if your type of night photography involves shooting scenery, a tripod which allows a longer shutter speed is a more urgent purchase than an external flash.
