Problem with Leica M6

Hi guys,

I recently got my first Leica M6 that worked fine and didn't have any problems.

However about a week back or so I noticed that the locking mechanism for the winder doesn't prevent the shutter from firing off if I press it.

It worked fine before, but I found it out when I absentmindedly pressed the shutter down while it was locked and it still went off.

Costed me a few precious frames, only solution at this point is not to wind after firing off so I don't accidentally fire off again, only to wind before going for a shot.

Is there a solution? Or do I have to get it fixed?

Thanks!

Since when do M's have a locking mechanism for the shutter release?

hmm i had a M6 before
as long as the shutter is cocked,it can be fired off
correct me if im wrong

I think only m7 has shutter lock. Just don't wind it till you are ready to shoot.

you can rewind back 1 frame if u accidentally press your shutter. takes a bit of experience to estimate how much to rewind back.

There is no shutter lock. That is all.

You don't have it anymore? awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I own an M6 and it does not come with any locking mechanism to prevent the accidental pressing of the shutter.

Like everyone said, there isn't any locking mechanism. Once shutter is cocked, you can basically fire the shutter. Solution for me is to **** only when I wanna fire. Hope this helps :)

Only the M7 has a shutter lock for mechanical Ms.

Best solution is to not **** the camera.

Oh yea, another point to take note. I've used quite a few Ms, all of them are always cocked to fire. I've never lost a shot even though the camera is in the bag. You guys might wanna remove that soft shutter release on your shutter button. It is the guilty one of triggering the shutter when in the bag.

Ah my bad. Sorry about that! I'll blame my poor experience and assumed knowledge.
Thanks for the many replies!!!

no worries, we are all here to learn and share.

as mentioned by the others, among the film Ms, only the M7 has a shutter lock. even the "off" position on the M6TTL only switches off the electronics, but the shutter once cocked, will fire when triggered.

as for the "locking mechanism for the winder" that you had referred to in your initial post... i would assume that you are referring to the rewind lever, the one next to the "R" in the front of the camera. this lever, when turned to "R" disengaged the film so that it can be rewound, and is not related to the trigger.

Gary, if my memory serves me well.... none of your M2 and M3 have soft shutters on. Don't you find them useful esp in low light conditions?

there are many types of "soft releases", and some are catered to various "styles" of triggering - some using finger tip, others top segment of the finger, some middle segment of the finger... i've even seen the middle finger being used to trigger. personally, i find that certain soft releases can help... but just as with the much used thumbsup for the digial Ms, these accessories can offer you a better grip of your camera and help with your triggering.

but all that been said, i believe you should still be able to acheive the same level of "steadiness" if you learn and practice to holding your camera and triggering without the accessories.

but some of the soft releases do look pretty...
