Primes for wedding

Just curious, why the 24L and not 16-35L if one needs wide coverage? F/1.4 ain't gonna cut for group shots right? For group shots one should be using a smaller aperture to keep everyone in focus... No?
And besides, they both cost similar... Just curious :)
24f1.4 give u ability to use f1.4 to isolate the subject whenever you want to shoot a single subject.

Most pro use 2 ff body, 24-70 on 1, prime on the other. If you cant afford 2 ff, u can try dx with zoom, ff with 35 or 50

I am not bothered by what the pros use, nor do I care for them. My only concern is the quality of shots.
I was just giving an example of the scenario if you have 1FF and 1APSC possible combo because at that time I only had 1 body and borrowed a 60D so that I don't have to switch lenses. Of course now the situation is different since I do have 2 FF bodies, but I would still use a zoom on one and a 50/85 prime on the other.

Table shots, just use a wide angle and do mind any distortion.

I think for wide-angle table shots, distortion is guaranteed to be there, even if you try to shoot at 24mm. Have to do some correction in LR.

Table shots I shoot with 35L. Not a problem for most tables and ballrooms. Not much of a distortion also.

As long as you don't frame your subjects too close to the sides... I usually helps in my company events and I kena once... Shot a female colleague the wrong way with my 16-35L and end up she transformed from a pig to a mammoth... :p

It's very challenging for anything below 30mm.. any little misplacement, you could turn the person into a chipmunk, a pikachu, or a dinosaur :bsmilie:

mammoth pig...lol

What are the normally settings that you guys will use during wedding shots?

Most usable: 16-35mm f2.8 and 24-70mm f2.8
unless you are going for arty arty shots.

I was thinking why not take a few steps back, because when everyone is beyond 3m away from you (the table is easily 1.5-2m in diameter) all will be in focus already regardless of the aperture size, focus to infinity

Sometimes taking a few steps back isn't an option.
Alternatively, 24 could be too wide and you have to take a few steps forward, but all the guests are waiting for you...pressure.
So in such situations, a zoom and a flash (for fill light) is best for group shots. Even with the 24, you will not be shooting at f2.8, more like f5.6-8. Concerns over taxing the flash are generally unfounded. If you've used the 580 or 430, you'd know these recycle extremely fast and are extremely reliable.

Regarding distortion for the 16-35, its mostly at the frame sides/edges, so don't frame your shots too tight and you should be fine.

Events shooting is always better and easier to use zoom..... faster.........

I used a 16-35mm f2.8 for group shots and a 24mm f1.4 to cover a friend's wedding. the 24mm f1.4 is excellent for recording video too. but of course that was not enough, there was another photographer with a zoom lens 17-50 f2.8. His is 550D while i use 5d Mk2..

My current set up is:
1. 1D3
2. 24-70 f2.8L
3. 70-200 f2.8L
4. 50 f1.4
5. 580 EX Mk2

I am trying to sell off my 1D3 as after using it for a while i missed my 5D2 and felt that i still like using FF bodies.

But now that the 5D3 is out.... Shld i sell away my 1D3 and 70-200 to fund for 5D3?? Cause as much as my 70-200 is my most precious lens... It doesnt get to work much.. Unless im doing portraits or if the event space is very spacious...

Any comments?

I think your 1D3 will be good to give extra reach for the zoom. if funding is not a problem, getting the 5D3 as your main body would be best... otherwise, selling you 1D3 is also good as 5D3 has exceptional ISO which when used with your lenses will give you options not to use the flash and get more natural looking shots. just my 2 cents worth... BTW, I shot my friend's wedding without any flash, just bumped the ISO to 4000 and shot wide open with 5D2. :)

Well.. The headache thing is whether the 5D3 is worth me selling 70-200 mk2 and 1D3?

Don't sell your 70-200 f/2.8 - yes, telephotos are the commonly underused lens generally, but since you already had the f/2.8, just keep it. If you sell it, I can almost guarantee you will miss it or even buy it again someday.. :bsmilie:
