Prime lens recommendation

i don't feel 28mm is very special either, its abit not here not there. so far 24, 35 and 50 are the most impactful focal lengths i ve used.

Usually I would comment that it is because you don't know how to use the lens, needing the focal length to bring about impact rather than bringing about impact with the focal length.

But seeing that Ben made that comment, I think it'd be fair to say the 28 doesn't suit his shooting style. I went from 28, 50, 105 to 20, 50, 105 and now whatever focal lengths that fancy me, almost except the exotics, or experimenting with. My last outing to NY was with 20, 85 just so that I work with the focal lengths and see what the focal lengths show me. I find that I see things differently when I am with different lens. I guess that's the discipline when one can't change lens underwater and if I have a macro lens on and a whale shark comes by I can choose to enjoy the whale shark or shoot the spots. Ha ha.

Hi TS, you pretty much done your analysis and know what you want/need...

A couple of pointers to share...

1) Since you're planning to buy a FX body, and keep your DX body as backup, it would make sense to acquire a few FX lenses that suit your shooting needs, keeping in mind that the FX lens can fit the DX bodies (albeit with the 1.5 crop factor).

2) Since the FX body is your main one, you'd better off selecting FX lenses that suit your event / seminar shooting needs. AFS 16-35/f4 VR is quite useful, good IQ too. The newly launched AFS 70-200/f4 VR is good to have. Plus a 50mm/f1.4 prime for low light.

For me, I shoot with two FX bodies (D3s and D700). My lenses are prime AF-D 20/f2.8, AF-S 24-85/3.5-4.5G VR, AF-S 70-200/f2.8 VRII.
For my travels, I just bring the D700 with AF-S 24-85/f3.5-4.5G VR, and the prime AF-D 20/f2.8 (just to keep the weight down).

Hope this helps.
Fred

Or you could use DX for work, for which you have the equipment for the trade, and FX for the times you're expressing yourself, i.e. going arty farty.

That's what I am doing, D300 and DX to cover events, and D800 when I am roaming Sydney, Kashmir, NY or wherever I am diving.

bring 2 also can, DX for long range 85+, FX for wide angel 16-85, that's what I always planned, but so far only have 1 dx body.

Thanks for the lens intro. At least I got a rough guide.

Ya, this is my dilemna now. Should I keep or sell the DX body? If go both FX, is tt practical?
One good thing abt DX at least is the 1.5 crop which means a longer reach. Gettin a 300 prime on a FX is gonna burst my pocket versus the 70-200 on a DX.

24 1.4 rocks... end of story. ;)

try 2.5K :)

Aiks... exactly. Unless I on full time or I really using this all the time, else I find it hard to spend so much on a prime.

Keep the DX body as a backup if you getting a FX body for your main purposes. Good to have a spare body in case of something went wrong.

Spare batt & Memory cards etc is also a must.

If i can choose, DX body for prime & FX body for zoom, or vise visa :P

You will be very surprise that not all professionals are using top grade lenses, unless that is a money lens.

from a business point of view, business proprietors will try to maximize their profits with minimum investment, for an instant, you will probably making same kind of profits with 24mm f2.8 lens than a 24mf1.4 lens, and this 24mf1.4 lens will cost 3 time more than the f2.8 version, and the best part is using a 24-70 f2.8 lens, it also able to cover 24mm focal length.
so there is no reason for a professionals to spend another 2.5k unless he able to make a lot of money from this particular item to justify the spending.

on the contrary, many hobbyists and amateurs buying gears are solely following their hearts.
