Prime lens or external flash?

No i don't. Please enlighten me. Don't worry about any technical jargons, if there is a chance i haven't come across it before, i can google it.

Also to the overpowering the sun comment. It's really not that easy with a flash on a bright sunny day. I'm not saying it's not possible. You need along the lines of a studio strobe to attain that effect with more ease.

hahah OKay la.... overpower the sun like really too hard. at least cross light subjects in midday is possible. and overpowering the ambient on a cloudy day is possible too!

I'm new to photography and I've just gotten a 50D with the kit zoom 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS. I have no doubt that it's a pretty good piece of zoom lens but I find that its aperture range is not good enough for indoor shooting with low lighting. The pictures either get too dark or too grainy when the ISO has to be increased.

Unfortunately, I'll like my pictures to be sharp and crisp so I figured that I need more light from either an external flash or better lens.

So here it is, I'll like to go easy on my pocket and I'm contemplating to pick up a good piece of prime lens OR probably Speedlite 430EX II / 580EX II first. What will you guys recommend and what are the considerations?

I got a prime lens 50mm f/1.8 and nissin di-622 for $356 in total! So far, both seems to be worthy purchases!
