Hi,

Have been playing with my Nikon D90 for a few months.
So far so good, but I heard prime lens are good.

Just wondering.
How 'good' is prime lens?
Many people are saying it's cheap and good.

Thanks

Hello.

Prime lenses are probably good because they're mostly smaller and sharper than most of the zoom lenses available. Cheap... maybe not. Good primes can easily cost more than zoom lenses.

By the way, the word "lens" is singular. "Lenses" is plural.

U lose out on versatilbilty but at a higher quality because of the precise construction of them primes as they are of a fixed focal length.

Think the main goodness in them is the weight and cost factor~ Comparatively to its zoom counterparts in its category.. :)

Tat cheap and good prime lens is probably the 50mm f1.8. Deviations from the 50mm, be it longer or wider and any increase in the maximum aperture will mean an increase in price.

Oh. lens and lenses. Got that down.

OK. I think it will be good for me to try that, since I like taking portrait and candid shots.

You may wanna consider the 30mm prime lens due to the crop factor for the D90. So comes to slightly around 50mm. Just a suggestion! ;)

Borrow/rent one before u buy. 50mm are usually pretty sweet

A Big Aperture Prime Lens is not cheap...But Good, especially for Low Light & Portrait shots...;)

I believe they have a very elaborated list of guide line prices for these Lens in this Forum...Just do a search...

Thanks. For now I want to get something small. Just got the price from SLR Revolution.
$182 for 50mm Prime lens.

by the way, what about 30mm for d90?
Is that better?
Suggestions are good. Give me a better idea what and which lens to take note.

Im having fun with the Sigma 30mm F1.4. I have not tried the others but the 30mm would give u an angle like a 50mm on a FF. 50mm on D90 is rather tight. The 30mm is excellent during low light conditions and it focus really fast. I guess it depends on what kind of shots you wanna take which will give you your choice between 30 and 50.

30 - Slightly wider, good for a group of maybe 4 pax with half body shots? 50 would be tighter. If im not wrong, 50mm on a D90 will come up to about 70+mm. You can take your kit lens and adjust to 30 and 50 to see the differences. Or you can rent the lenses before buying. Both the sigma 30mm and 50mm are really great lenses.

Do correct me if im wrong. =)

yup I think you've pretty much covered it! :)
TS, follow dingdongz's advice and use your kit lens at the 2 focal lengths 30mm and 50mm... Try taking photos without zooming, then you'll know which focal length is your preferred. It may be 30, or 50, or neither...

for me I use the Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G, and I find the focal length quite suitable for me to just carry my camera and prime lens for walking around. It costs more than the 50/1.8 of course, but not as much as the Sigma 30/1.4 :)

i recently bought a 35mm Nikon and it can never let you down. Amazing sharpness and very fast focusing speed and amazing for indoor shoots.

I found 50mm too tight for indoor shots.

Got mine for 310 brand new from nikon with 1 yr intl warranty, its worth the money.

DeepS

Wow $310 is cheap if you get it on the market like CP! RESTRICTED But if you get from Nikon SG direct. I thought was only $299? RESTRICTED

Amazing. 3 choices for me now.
Thanks.

For norm, you cant possible to get it from Nikon direct.

As for prime and you budget, I suggest visiting John 3:16 and check 35mm and 50mm. If not get a quote from cathay first and save the trouble bargaining.
