i 4th the statement...

bought the 50 f1.8II, in the end, sold it and still got myself the 50 f1.4

The 50 f/1.8 II is a great value-for-money lens. But since my specialisation in portraiture, i have to upgrade.

Haha cos now i'm going all for Ls already. The L virus is calling out for u! :bsmilie:

No need to get new ones.. look thru the BNS section. Lots of pple upgrading and selling their 50 F1.8. Can get good deals there.

Also can consider the Tamron 17-50 F2.8. I think it's more versatile than the 50 and it's the lens I used most.

ha...soon...soon... wipe up all the prime 1.2 off the shelves. :bsmilie:

Go for the Canon 'Awsome Foursome' of prime lenses ...

  1. 35mm f/1.4 L
  2. 50mm f/1.2 L
  3. 85mm f/1.2 L
  4. 135mm f/2 L

Get inflicted severely by the BBB virus ... and you'll be forever immune to it thereafter !!!

Hahaha.... kidding there. :sticktong

The ones that really tickle my fancy would be the 35L and the 85L. But since your budget is a concern, go with the 50 f/1.8 as you still may not have found which focal length suits your shooting style yet. Saves a lot of heartache later. Even if you like the 50mm, the cost of upgrade is less as its already so cheap, loss on re-sale is minimal.

Don't forget to include the 300mm F2.8L IS to complete the collection...:bsmilie:

this 2 are highly contagious...super super lenses.

Here's mine.

High-end equipment does not ensure good photos.

Let go for 1.4/1.2 first, (When i get ready) 85 F1.2 ... :D
Get 50mm 1.8 (Stay c00L)

The 50 f/1.8 II is a gd start. Then slowly u upgrade to the 85 f/1.2L II.

Back to the original question... yes get a zoom and a prime. Your prime should be fast but 1.8 is fast enough for most uses.Get the 50mm 1.8 and enjoy it.

If you want to expand get the Sigma 30mm 1.4 or a Canon 24/28/35 whatever, instead of a better 50mm.

Stick with the 18-55 kit lens or look at a 2x-7x like the Sigma or a Tamron.

merge ur budget for 2 lense into 1 and get the Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8IS first?

40D body
Due to budget, is hard for me to get Canon lens.
Please advice me which will perfer ? All i personally tested.

For walk arounf lens (17-55) F2.8 Canon replacement.
-Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD
-Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro or 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC or 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro

For Portrait (EF 50mm f/1.4 USM) Canon replacemet
-EF 50mm f/1.8 II (canon)
-30mm f1.4 (Sigma)

but don't wish to get the Kit lens (feel not much useful for low light condition & sharp)

Please help me.

If you have tried these lenses yourself then you should be able to make the choice on your own
you can always listen and read other peoples reviews but ultimately its up to You the user on what would be a great lens for your personal use...

the 50mm 1.8 II is great value for money and the sigma 30mm f1.4 is great for 1.6 fovc bodies and takes great pics indoors (even in small spaces... )
