I've decided to get a S1500 and am wondering whether to buy it online before I go on holiday or whether to buy it at Singapore Airport.

1) Do the shops there have the latest models?
2) Any idea on whether their prices are competitive?

Daniel.

which terminal you are leaving the country from?

the price is just without the gst only if im not wrong.
so it is slightly cheaper compare from you buying from superstores

You will be better off buying from the regular shops in Singapore. The few times I asked I didn't leave with the impression they were any cheaper inspite of the GST component. But of course, counter service is much better. Must put on a nice face with all the foreigners around.

Yes the shops should stock the model. (I can help you check during my break later)

The prices here are generally competitive as they have this clause to fuifill.

But I still feel that you could have gotten a better price elsewhere if you want to save a bit. (:

Hi Merlala,

Do you work there?
If so could you please check a price for me :)
It's the Canon EOS 500D.
I will be transiting in two weeks and would like to purchase it

Many thanks if you could do this for me

Yes, for foreign visitors on transit. The Duty Free Shop (DFS) at Changi offers very competitive price and good service. Also you can claim back the VAT before departure. But it also depends on your destination. If it is Hong Kong, then maybe it makes more sense to buy in your destination country. If you are comparing with Europe, North America, Middle East, Africa and most part of Asia. The DFS at Changi offers competitive price.

I find that prices at airport shops and restaurants tend to cost more.
This is expected.
No complaints.
Their rental is high.
Their customers are tourists, Sing locals who are on their way to other places and well, ...people who go to airports.
The shops are located far from main shopping belts, meaning less customer base.
They need to staff the shop.
It is a convenience to you the traveller.
So you have to pay a bit more.
Fast food joints have the most reasonable prices at airports.

Compared the price of LX3 at Changi. $749 with no GST compared to $679 in town including the tax. Freebies seemed same.. Pouch, SD Card, Cleaning kit etc...

Buy in town with international warranty if possible.

Airport shops tend to cost at least 10% - 20% more despite the fact that they have no GST.

A SanDisk Extreme IV 8GB Compact Flash card is S$185 at the airport and S$140 in town, so don't buy at the airport unless you're going to a country with very few electronics retailers and realised you don't have the stuff you want before you leave (i.e. emergency purchases).

Also, because of the relatively strong SGD, it's actually cheaper to buy at stores in the US, Australia and UK now compared to Changi Airport. I've done price comparisons at major cities and let me tell you, they are really competitive nowadays.

my my, i thought they will be cheaper with tax rebates, seems like it isn't the case..

we are cementing ourselves as a land of choppers! lol. when the tourist arrive only kena chop at airports leh..amusing don't you guys think?..haha

Was looking for a Oly Tough 8000 for a cousin. was travelling a few weeks ago and i was quoted S$558 (tax free). it was a shop in Terminal 2. called CP-P before flying, i was quoted $S555(w/gst). When i got back to Singapore 4 days later, went to CP-P and got the cam for S$550!! (w/gst). the packages were the same - 8 gig card, extra battery, camera case.

Price wise, i would conclude that there's no advantage of getting tax-free items in the airport. but its good that you can do last minute shopping if you forgot something at home that youd want to have during the flight or while travelling.

You'd be surprised. Even for WINE, which is supposed to carry a heavy tax, the same thing can be cheaper in town...

you are right, the camera is more expensive than those shops in town, - often browsing there before flight, and the service might be as good as expectation, only cigarette and alcohol cheaper. nothing else! :bsmilie:

Singapore economy just lost S$1k. Hey guys, help the Singapore economy leh. The DFS is actually quite competitive for tourist on transit. Of course if you do check-out from the airport, there are more competitive options on the street available.

People who read this thread are not going to patronize Changi DFS. So guys, please think before you type.

i wouldn't think that the singapore economy will collaspe just cause changi DFS have no business right..sounds very far fetched..

Actually, the fast food prices in airport is more expensive than elsewhere. But, as ricoh mentioned, I agree its due to the rental costs there. I travel quite frequently and noticed the BK prices are a good 10%+/- premium over other places.

ever heard of snowball effect? don't underestimate the power of Internet.

No, I don't own DFS but I travel very often and zip through airports frequently. While the price is not the lowest in Singapore, it is definitely cheaper and has more variety in one place than in many parts of the world. So it is relative to where you come from and where your destination is. If time permits, do checkout the street price in Singapore. If you are on transit, then time, convenience can be a factor.

A lot of people also complain that SQ is no good. But I have flown so many major airlines from AA, BA, Luthansa, Swissair, Turkish, Emirates, Qantas, China Air, Qatar, Cathay Pacific, etc and couldn't find a better one. So let's not be quick to poison your own well. End of the day, you still have to live in it. :)
