how far would the distance be if i am shooting head shot at 70mm? i want to try capture those natural facial expression without the subject noticing :D
and is the range suitable for travelling?

You'd better get a 50-200 for that purpose. Don't be afraid of changing lenses. Two-lens solution will be far better than one mega zoom one IMHO. After you use the 50-200, you won't like the 18-200 in that range at all ;)

Two lenses - this one and a fast prime...

And you're right about the compromises, but this lens is all about convenience, and frankly if you're really good (composition wise) and if the image is sharp, the other issues (vinegetting, distortion) can be easily photoshopped away.

Sometimes even sharpness can be photoshopped, nowadays ;)

any good prime to recommend?

I agree with Fengwei that it is better to stick with 50-200 if lizzy want to do street candid without being notice. 70mm is too short for this. Using a prime of 135mm and above is a good focal so that the subject won't easily notice you.

The purpose of owning an SLR give you the flexiblity to change lens so as to get good image quality. There is no need to be afraid of changing lenses. It is better off spending the money on super mega zoom point and shoot digicam for the money put into mega zoom lenses. And those digicam are probably smaller, lighter and more compact than those heavy bulky mega zoom lenses with big large filter size.

Hope you don't mind my 2cent worth...

primes - 50 1.4 is the most popular choice. 40 2.8 is the smallest (DSLR lens presently available from any manufacturer), other options which should be quite easily available are:

31 1.8, 43 1.7, 77 1.8, 70 2.8

Eh. Don't know what you should get. I have a 50 1.4 mainly because I can't get anything that fast elsewhere, and it' s pretty affordable. (only the 40 2.8 costs less).

I agree generally with the point that fengwei and seafone are making - that there are better options for image quality than the 18-250, but I think it's worthwhile noting that the 18-250:
1. has a filter size of 62mm and weights 430g - it's not really that large/heavy.
2. appears to be better (From the bobatkins review, and elsewhere) than the 3rd party iterations of the 18-200. However, there's probably some sample variation.

And - guys - changing lenses sucks. IT's sometimes a necessary evil, but... it still sucks.

There's no point in getting a 70mm if you already have a 77mm.

thanks guys for your inputs... there are pros and cons of using multi lens vs single lens solution... personally, i feel travelling light, traveling with a peace of mind (just 1 lens + body to take care of), having the right zoom when you need it (tour group would have left before i can change lens or set up a tripod :bsmilie: )

well dunno if i can wait for 18-250 to come to singapore... will need a travel lens early may for my trip. found that tamron is using plastic mount while signma use metal mount... might be getting a sigma 18-200 after all.. saw somewhere the sigma is optically better (slightly) than tamron.

btw, how do you guys check lens when buying? bring camera and notebook and check at 100%? first time buying, so dun want to look like an idiot hee..

in what situation would the 50 1.4 be useful in? indoor with dim light and flash is not allowed? how much does it cost?
