Any idea what's a good price for R1?

Went down to Sony Gallery Bugis and they told me that the price if fixed everywhere. And when i wanted to test how fast it takes the RAW file to write, they told me that only the Pro use RAW while non-pro only shoot in jpg. Guess they must be toking tok.

Do read more reviews (eg. http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_r1-review/index.shtml ) besides that of dpreview if you are interested in the R1. Some reviewers are more impartial than others. All cameras have their good and bad points and each potential buyer have to decide for himself if he can live with the flaws of the cameras that he is considering.

If you don't intend to shoot RAW or need high burst rates for jpeg, or need an optical view finder or movie mode, then it should be OK. Also, do check out the prices of the accessories for the R1 and satisfy yourself that they are affordable to you if you need them. Personally, I got very turned off by the absolutely huge sizes of these accessories and their sky-high prices.

The confirm talking tok.

Either they are not skilled enuff to identify you as a pro, or they don't expect pro to buy it.

;p

I'm no pro. But i shoot raw.

The 2 RAW buffer is sufficient for me but would be nice if it can have continous shots in RAW.

Thanks for the link.
Just need the R1 to fill a certain nich with the LCD for low angle/waist level shots. The lens range is sufficient. Don't really need any other accessories.

The size and weight of the cam is a little turn-off though....

The Big raw files can be easily solved by the relatively cheap CF cards and conversion into DNG.

keke, unless necessary, I will avoid RAW. Cos too much in my workflow. ;)

So where's the cheapest shop selling the R1?

MsColour selling for SGD1480 after GST if I am not wrong. Credit card will cost more. You will have to collect the freebie from bugis yourself.

Try buying from the US if you don't mind not having local warranty. Price around US$750+ and still got US$100 rebate - which might work if you got USA relatives. Someone posted about this in dpreview sony forum.

Be warned tho' R1 is a wonderful camera - very hard to give it up once you played with it seriously.

Yes, it's true. Just handled it before and almost got hooked. Loves that LCD monitor that's big, sharp and clear. If not of the top placement design of the LCD monitor (I'd prefer the normal centre placement of the monitor) and the slow writing of the RAW format; have most probably got it already. :D

Thought its more like a MF killer... hehe... cos the top down view really seem like using a MF/TLR.

Yeah, the top-down view looks good and excellent if use at waist level but if you intend to bring it up to the eye level will have either to flip up the monitor or use the EVF. Somehow I felt that after flipping up the monitor, I find it abit funny to compose a shot due to the monitor is on top rather than at the usual centre portion. Well that's me; may have to learn to get use to it.:bsmilie:

someone selling at $1100 at B & S.

I read the review that if u shoot raw, the file write time is about 9 sec, take note.

Not so long unless u use normal speed card.
I use a MS (not the top end one but mid range one). Take just about 3 seconds in write time.
With 2 shots RAW buffer and the 3 wait time for writing, the overall timing is accetable.

For R1, the lens itself justify the cost already
For Sony Alpha mount CZ lens RRP
DT16-80mm f3.5-4.5Z = nov = 103950 - S$1,426.14658
equivalent to 24-120mm in 35mm terms.
which is about the same price as the camera R1.

Too bad R1 don't have AS/SSS or IS kind anti-shake function, if not I may get one beside my DSLR.

take note.. i dun think the aperture can go smaller than f8... (maybe i am wrong) but definitely never hitting f22... so its like a crippled CZ lens.

Yes. Even if the CZ lens can go down to F22,

the CCD/CMOS is an important factor because no point having a CZ lens but a lousy CCD/CMOS sensor.

The R1 is really good for a prosumer. RAW write times... yes... for studio or outdoor shots can. For sports, no. No dust problems, no need to buy additional lens, live-view.

Depends on what you need. R1 is enough to bring photography into another level, the level on par with budget dSLR except for buffer memory.

hmm.... DPreview site mention is f/16 though? How frequently do we use more than f/22?
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscr1/
• Wide: F2.8 - F16
• Tele: F4.8 - F16

Ya, can't agree more. Main thing I am attracted to R1 is mainly the CZ lens and the Sony LCD monitor (Sony is really good at their LCD screen, super sharp and clear; seems to be the best out there):bsmilie:
