Hi all,

I would like to get myself the above lens. Saw from the old price guide that it was 1165..was wondering if it will be cheaper since the price stated was dated '09...also wondering what minor improvements is VRII over VR....thanks!

You can get a second hand one from b/s for about 800+, quite a lot of people selling. VR1 even cheaper, some selling about 600+

The differences between VRI and II are very slight and almost negligible. Some cosmetic changes, and a switch to lock the lens cos this lens suffers from lens creep (the lens starts zooming by itself when you point it down), so they put in a switch to lock it at 18mm. Aside from that all the stuff insides the same.

personally, i would go for VR II.

What if i prefer a new lens? Any recommended places with good prices? Anyone knows what is the current price? I am thinking of buying the d7000 body only to pair with the above lens...

think you can check out the price guides ba. some of the info there could be outdated so you may have to ring up the shops.

U can try iphoto. Bought my d7000 body for 1700 and 18-200 for 1080. My lens i pay by installment using credit card.

Is it true that the lens is made in Thailand and Japan?? Coz a friend of mind said that his is made in Japan and you know what they say, made in Japan is best. :dunno::confused:

Take a look at the things around you, half are made in China.

In fact, heck, take a look at your iPhone, and see where it's assembled in. :)

it doesnt really matter where it was made as long as the QC is up to standard.

Thailand.....

There is actually an initial batch of 18-200 made in Japan. But the design is the same...

The 18-200 VR first version has a design issue where, if the ribbon cable comes loose from the glue after some time, the zoom mechanism will hit into it and crush it. When that happens, the VR will fail. Repair cost will be around 180 which is mostly labor, but the cost of parts = $12 (the ribbon cable).

So you know, before you jump in.

Hahaha... but I think even if I told my friend this he will still insist that made in Japan is best. Kind of difficult to teach an old dog new tricks :bsmilie:
