It is now a common practice, at least among some ClubSnappers when asking for a quote, to ask if the price quoted includes GST.
I’m not sure if this has been raised before, but under the GST Regulations it is mandatory (unless exempted by the Comptroller for GST) for a GST-registered person to show and quote GST-inclusive prices to the public for all prices displayed, advertised, published and quoted verbally or in writing.
Exceptions are usually granted to hotels / F&B Industry only.
All prices stated on the advertisements should be inclusive of GST, and the following clauses are not acceptable: -
"Prices stated are subject to GST"
"Prices stated are exclusive of GST"
"Prices stated are before GST"
This includes price-lists prepared by the supplier, i.e. if Nikon provides RRP to a GST-registered shop, the shop is required to ensure that the price stated is GST-inclusive. No passing of the buck to Nikon, no "Nikon provided the list, I dunno anything".
Of course, don’t expect to quote the GST Regulations to those shops that quote prices exclusive of GST, but it pays to know the law.
Infraction of this part of the Act carries a fine of up to $5,000.
