My E-500 after upgraded to camera firmware 1.2. The Auto WB becomes unstable. Standing at the same spot, I shoot first 2 shot, it's warm, 3rd shot, it's cool. It wasn't so when it was on 1.0. But 1.2 solve the vignetting issue.

The E-1 has an external white balance sensor, and is accurate most of the time. I wonder why it is not implemented in all the other Oly DSLRs... :dunno:

Custom WB is a precious tool if you want consistent images, but impossible to do in some situations. This means one also has to train their eye to be able to estimate the colour temperature so that the consistent difference is easier to fix in post via bulk processing.

Ahh in conditions such as those, the E-1 has a one-touch WB button out by the lens mount. :thumbsup:

Personally, I don't entirely trust the WB on my E500.

It's only set to auto when I shoot with a Flash.

Without Flash, WB is usually not consistant (even when set to AUTO). It differs depending on what aperature you're using and even if that's fixed, it can very from shot to shot with the same aperature/shutter settings.

I finally gave in to the hype and got an expodisc. To me, it costs an arm and a leg and half a liver but it really does enable more consistant WB.

But the expodisc's no good when you're shooting under "warm" lighting and you want to preserve warm tones. (using the expodisc to set WB will make everything neutral)

In these situations I use manual WB and trial and error till I get something I like before shooting away.

Guess we can all hope that Oly releases a fix for this in a Firmware upgrade soon...

actually since film days colour balance already a problem. just that then we don print it ourselves. if you give your negative to different ddeveloper you get different colours too. its up to them to adjust.

thats why ppl shoot slides...then the same problem happens when you wanna print them. again different labs give different results.

treat the digital like film. set to 5500k like daylight film. i usually do that. pic may have a little varient dut to surrounding colours reflected back but at least its more predictable.

I shoot with sun mode when use flash and outdoor shots. Most of the times it turns out well for my white ballance.

I'll describe my WB workflow when I was using the E-300, it has probably the most finicky of AWB of all Oly DSLRs:

1. Recce all the shooting areas, if covering an event.
2. If indoors, check out the lighting i.e. whether tungsten, flourescent, neon (horror!).
3. Do one-touch white balancing using paper, expodisc (i use the chiong version - expoamigo), pringles cap.
4. Test shooting! To check colour balance. If ok, so be it; if not, repeat (3).
5. If using flash, remember to switch back to 5300K.
6. If this is all too much trouble, either (1) shoot RAW, or (2) switch to an E-1.

My guess it is something wrong with your camera or the way you handle the camera. I haven't seen any variation depending on aperture but definitely depending on color temperature and ambient light color.

I've experienced this on my E-300 with the 50mm Macro before, with the lens wide open it AWB tends to set a warmer tone, at f3.5 downwards it's ok. Do note that this happened indoors under tungsten/neon lighting.

Guess what...blu made a big boo boo with the E-330. All self inflicted mistakes. I set the cam to EV bracket 1 and forgot and continue shooting!!! and that pano won't join now normal, dark then light!!!! AAaggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!:bheart:
