For my i will buy two 1GB SD card just in case one get corrupted and you are stuck with no card.. always have a back up card if necessary.. you nv know what will happen.. Any way the 1 GB card cost $50.90 and the 2GB card cost $103.90, thus getting two 1GB is much is about the same price.. The brand is kingston ultimate.

Thanks for all the advice from the bros here, i think i might just buy a 1GB normal speed card and another 1GB high speed card for higher performance shootings. I actually am planning to use my camera for shooting scenery on holidays and car racing events so this combo might just work for me... Also works on my budget which is $850+ (camera+accessories). Think i'll go for the energizers too as im pretty confident with their batteries. Better buy some disposable ones too for backup.
As for the drybox, i think all i need is a pretty cheap and basic one, i'm currently studying in australia so humidity isnt really a problem here, its about 50-70% here and low temp all year round.
Too bad i cant join u guys for photo outings but i'll post my pics from down under... Cheers!

Why not get both cards of the same speed? True, it is a bit more expensive. However, you can just shoot video with whatever card you have in the camera, no need to switch cards.

Happy shooting, do post your pictures in the S1/S2/S3 pictures thread.

Hey, just take note that standard speed card has problem when you shoot video at the best resolution. Do you think you will switch card in between foto and video shoot? Then the purpose of Canon making the video recording a one-button activation is being wasted.

To me highspeed and standard speed is about $6 diff only......see the price below:

Kingston 256/512/1/2: 17.6/19.8/36.3/74.9
Kingston HS 256/512/1/2: 19/24.8/42.9/84.3
Kingston Ultimate 1/2: 49.5/101.7

Hmmm very true... So its more advisable to buy a larger 2GB card than 2 cards? Cause if i'm shooting video i would need more space per card or else i have to change in-between shoots? I understand that if i'm on one card and it fails me then i'm in trouble, but what are the chances of that happening?

My first consideration was budget but i guess we cant skimp on essential equipment such as memory... But should i buy the ultimate (120x) or the HS (50x)? I was thinking that a 6mp camera does not need the 120x write speed but i'm not so sure abt this, any experiences/comments?

Again many thanks for the great help from all the guys here, i'm not new to cameras but this is my first semi-pro camera and i'm a little out of touch with digital photography. Used to own an olympus 2.1mp and a ixus 400. And after this camera i might just buy a dSLR in the near future :)

If you want to take video, the 2GB card still not suffificent for a holiday. if i am not wrong, the full 2GB can only record about 15 to 20 mins of video.

Any one can confirm?

then how about your photos? definitely you will need at least 2 cards.. just incase the first one was used up. remember that we are taking digital photo and there is no limit on how many shot we take. there were cases where i took 10++ shots for once scene.. and only 3 came out perfectly sharp.. the rest have to discard.. but you only do this when you veiw those pic in PC cos the lcd is too small to determine the quality of the shot.

Most of the time, the shot will look very sharp and nice in the lcd but when you load into PC then you know that the pic was very bad..

thus if on holiday, end of the day, you need to determine those which you think is not good and delete them away..

We will nv get enough memory when going for holiday..

If you want to buy two 1GB cards, I advise two of at least elite pro 50x cards as the price difference is not that great.

As for batteries, the Sanyo battery problem is hopefully just an isolated problem. Like I said, Sanyo OEMs for many manufacturers. So, if you want to go for Energizers, just note that they are also made by ...... Sanyo!!! Same with Sony and Kodak batteries.

Common saying:

Memory is cheap, memories are priceless.

There is no harm in getting two 2GB cards, go on your holiday, snap pictures like crazy. However, do review the pictures at the end of the day. Delete those that you do not like. Continue shooting the next day. Do not get into the 'Its a bit out of focus, but it looks so nice' habit. You will purge all your bad pictures this way. Then post all your nice pictures. This way people will think you have good skills. Keep the bad pictures to yourself. This is why I do not have many pictures posted, most of mine sux :bsmilie:

I think 1GB can take up to about 60min?

Look under Stereo Movie Recording Capability

Not true har? Haven't try though......

I can confirm standard speed cannot record video properly at highest settings. I tried TwinMos UltraX 66X, no prob. Didn't try Kingston ElitePro 50X.

But someone replied some where in the thread ealier said that Kingston ElitePro 50X can do without prob.

So, I would say that Utimate is an over-kill.

Wow! Just realised that the longest few threads in Canon is by the Sx IS group.......:)

Er...guys... now the free gift for S3IS give what ya?

Izzit just a 512 card selling at $755??

Officially, yes.....unofficially, see how you bargain with the shops.:bsmilie:

Okay i'll go for the 2 x 1GB 50x cards then, i dont think i'll be recording video shots often so i have the backup plan with 2 cards covered. As for batteries, i'm a little lost between the sanyo and the energizers...

I was thinking like for example, kingston RAM chips are made by twinmos (OEM); twinmos has their own line of RAM as well, but they are not as highly regarded as kingston due to perhaps a better manufacturing process and benefits such as lifetime warranty. Maybe its the same case with the sanyo and energizer batteries?

I think i just have to choose a better charger right? Cause the sanyo charger can also charge energizer batteries and vice versa...

Why dun go for the kingston ultimate 120x speed for a few dollars diff and you dun worry about the speed anymore...
