i am using 50mm too, for full body shots, you have to crop the image.. I am thinking to get canon 35mm f2 for my 550d for better full body portrait

For portrait, when I need to zoom I use the Tamron AF 28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)

For full body shots, I use the Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM. It produces very beautiful bokeh. Once you start with the Sigma you will always be looking out for diffused backgrounds for your portraits. You will be addicted.

I have the cheap Canon 50mm. Though it is cheap, it is very good and resonably sharp.

i saw some review on Sigma 30mm f1.4 not really that great compare with canon EF 28mm f1.8. Hence, I am giving 2nd thought on the lens.. the cons that i dont like is the warranty on 30mm f1.4, which I believe there is really good copy as well bad copy..

85 f1.2L came out top in that thread  This lens will definitely break the bank.

If TS wants to go all out for portraiture, get the 50 f1.8 and 85 f1.4. Will cost more than 1k. But it will be more worth it than just a 70-200 f2.8. Although it may be more versatile, it will be more expensive and impractical to carry it around everywhere.

My recommendation for full-body coverage is Sigma 30mm f/1.4 too. But go to a shop and try it out, compare the view angles versus Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2. Let your eyes experience them first hand, not just merely on the words of others.

erm, ok now you are looking to spend $3K instead of $1K? 70-200 won't let you capture full-body unless you stand FAR away.

Solidify your photo-taking requirements. They are practically opposite ends of the viewing angle.

I am not going to make another lens suggestion because others have already suggested some good lenses. However, which ever ones you are thinking about buying, I would go down to a local camera store and try out with your camera. And if you are thinking about doing portraits bring a friend and see the distance you will need for each lens, and see if the lens is right for you before you purchase it.

really depends on what type of shoot you do.
85 F1.8
its less than 1k.
for crop... you probably do half body or head shots
if u dun mind walk a bit more than full body

however if distance is not a problem... you really have to consider 135F2
its about 1.3K, cheapest of the Ls
great for portraits only con is the dist for crop

do rent the lens before buying, it would helps on your buying decision

85f1.8
sigma 30mm 1.4

From your list of poison, recommend you this:
17-50F2.8 non-vc ($650) - if you dun mind the AF noise
70-200F4 - good for outdoor portrait, more leg power required
50F1.8 - cheapest prime len you can find
85F1.8 - good bokeh & low light, myself i would prefer this for portrait lens for crop.

Thats my 2cents worth:)

I would go for tamron 17-50, but with your budget I'll go for canon's USM 17-55MM :)

i use 450D also..
sigma 30mm F1.4 for full body
85mm f1.8 for head only.

it up to ur preference..
but i find those 2 lens is a great combo..
and use 18-55 as daily lens...

it might be suitable to ur budget.

hehehe

*just my 2 cents opinion*
;);)

ok guys..... i have cut down to this 2........

17-50 f2.8 ($1078)
70-200 F4

may i know the price for 70-200 f4???

Ppl said tamron 17-50 non vc is sharper. I am thinking to get either sigma 30mm f1.4 or non vc 17-50 or canon 28mm f1.8 confuse

may i know the price for 70-200 f4???

70-200F4 - SGD$1.2k
70-200F4IS - SGD$1.9k

i think for 17-50..we dnt need IS..
hehehe

i saw so many 70-200 F4 non IS in forum

if just looking at portrait id just go with

sigma 30mm + 50mm 1.4 for both. covers most of the shots one would usually take. add in 85mm 1.8 only if you really want headshots

Hi all,

I heard Sigma has one potrait zoom lens that should be just slightly over $1000. it is the 50 - 150 mm f2.8 EX DC HSM. With 1.6x gives about 80 - 240mm equivalent of a full frame. Hear it is a pretty sharp lens on Nikon, there is a Canon mount version. You can check it out in Photozone.de. But so far haven't seen anyone talking about it in Clubsnap. You can consider along the 70 - 200 (112 - 320mm on FF) to see which one you like.
