Thats good for you. At the end of the day, you have to factor in personal preference. Some like the 35mm, some prefer the 50mm, while some would die for the 85mm.

Prime lens means the lens is a single focal length lens i.e. no zoom.
It is either Zoom lens or Prime lens. There is no prime zoom.
OOF = out of focus.
DoF = is the area where objects are in focus.
I find 35/1.8 sharper than the 50/1.8. But 50/1.8 gives you more background blur. Different lens different use.

I like the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G, and it is my opinion that it is sharper. Of course, there are other elements that you may consider, including bokeh and your style. As mentioned earlier, some people favor certain focal length over others.

If you cannot decide, it is better to try out with your kit lens first,
so you won't end up buying blindly...
35mm, 50mm, 85mm are just guidelines, not a rule of thumb...
Example: I take head shots with a 200mm, this also works...

I mainly use prime lens..
have the Sigma 50mm and 30mm F1.4 and also Nikon 35mm F1.8..
personally i love the bokeh the Sigma lens produces as compared to Nikon 35mm F1.8..
it terms of sharpness i think the Sigma is sharper..
if u are deciding which focal length to get.. i agree with the Treetrunk..
set the focal length of ur kits lens and you will know which is comfortable for your shoots..
btw..
Nikon 35mm F1.8 is only $320+ brand new..
check the Nikon price guide..

Sigma 50/30/24 all produce very pleasing bokeh. They appear sharper because of more a thinner DoF, and the contrast between the in-focus subject and the creamy OOF background. I find the 35/1.8 as sharp as, if not sharper than the Sigma 50 or 30.
And 35/1.8 is a lot cheaper than $325 if you get it overseas.
wa nikon 35 f1.8 so cheap ah... make me jealous... canon one is so old and yet still expensive compare to the nikon one...
But it is a DX only lens, sort of like your EF-S
For Nikkor 35mm f1.8, it's fully compatiable with D90 (DX). (Correct me if i'm wrong)
For Nikkor 50mm f1.8, its compatiable with DX and FX?

If I'm not wrong 50mm f/1.8 is not a DX lens but an FX... so... fully compatible with crop or FF bodies.

Look at the Nikon lens general page below. DX is just a small category. The rests can be used on FX.

Silent wave motor... newer generation of in-body motors... Without the -S... older generation in-body motors - usually noisier.
That said, all new Nikkor lens releases would generally come with AF-S these days... the older AF lenses (still in Nikkor catalogues) lingers on the shelves... Old lenses that still have market demands.
Edit: some new lenses DO come as AF without the -S...
