I am having both. The Tamron has fantastic performance and it stays on my body most of the time. :) Still thinking if I should sell the 18-105.

However never head that the tamron is sharper than the nikkor ;p. Tried the Nikkor 24-70, it's noticeably better.
Although I'm mostly using my Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens now, I think the 18-105mm kit lens is great for travelling, especially when I want to take landscape shots.. So, i'll still keep the kit lens..

I think I’ll use the DSLR mainly for portrait, indoor, macro and some casual shooting… might need a zoom lenses when going for travel maybe once or twice a year….

mate, if you are doing mostly portrait, indoor and casual shooting, i reckon the tammy's a better choice...the brighter tammy will come in useful especially in low-light...gives you a bit more flexibility (open wider instead of upping the ISO which might introduce grain into your shots)...and the IQ will be better than the 18-105...

if you really need the zoom capability, i'd say supplement it later with a used 55-200VR which i see on CS selling for sometimes less than 250 bucks...

on my last 2 week trip in japan, the 18-55 kit lens was mounted 80 to 85% of the time...and this is crappier as compared to the tammy (which incidentally i am THIS close to buying :bsmilie: ), so yeah, the tammy for sure ;)

Hi Bro and Sis,

Newbie over here… I’m planning to buy the Nikon D90 very soon but need some experts’ opinion/suggestion for the lenses. I know that the default kits lenses for D90 is the AF-S 18-105mm…. When doing the survey, I spotted the Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) and I’m very attracted to it:bigeyes:. So, I’m now thinking whether to buy just only the D90 body (S$1400 referring to price found here) + the Tamron lense (S$650) or just buy the D90 with it's default kits lenses which is around S$1680 for starting.

FYI, I think I’ll use the DSLR mainly for portrait, indoor, macro and some casual shooting… might need a zoom lenses when going for travel maybe once or twice a year….

Appreciate all your advices or suggestions… Many thanks in advance.

If this is your first DSLR, it maybe better to get the kit lens first to understand your preferred range. If you have been shooting for quite a while, you should have an idea if the range is for you.

2nd hand nikkor 17-55...
no need to buy twice...it is in my opinion..no horse run..

Er,what do u mean?

Anyone else having a problem like this?

I have a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 XR LD Di II . In Liveview mode and only at the longer focal lengths of lens, the D90 will not lock focus and gives up after about 1 to 2 seconds of trying.

Quirky on the short end, and impossible in the tele range. The focusing square will blink red after trying to focus for a while and quit.

Other than the liveview focusing, other features seem to work just as fine. Focusing through the view finder is fast and accurate, and the lens is sharp.

Hi

I've just tried and taken a few shots at various FL at home. Despite the dim light, no problem in focusing at all.

Is your Tammy with or without motor? I wonder if it makes any difference?

And I prefer the Tammy over the 18-105 kit lens which get left behind in the dry cabinet all the time. It's probably due to the large apperture that I prefer.

With Motor

I am not a Nikon user, but I too vote for Tamron for it's F2.8.

You never know when you will need that big aperture especially when you are travelling with your family.

For me, when I was in Paris Disneyland with my family, this great Tamron lens have enabled me to shoot outdoor and some indoor shots without having to change lens.

Imagine having to change to a fast prime during indoor while carrying your son and bags etc...and frequent indoor and outdoor every few minutes....

Tamron, it's the best lens you can get with the IQ, speed for the price!!! No other lens is in this category for this price...

hi bro, no doubt with the tammy lens. i owned both lens so i can make a fair judgement. initially, i thought the longer the zoom the better the lens. but zoom lens usually yield not so good quality and that irks me alot despite the fact that the 18-105 is convenient for zoom shots. i sold my 18-105 and got myself a 18-200. i like taking portrait shots so quality to me, facial expression, lines, these are important aspect. today, im using my tammy most of the time because it is sharp, fast and works well under low lighting. really depends on what you need. if you like candid shots then a zoom lens is suitable.

Hmmmm.... :think:Anyone else tested this issue? could it be the setting problem or Tamron limitation with D90???

* :angel:Thanks again for all the advices & information sharing from all bro&sis here.... keep it coming... hehe:cheers:

i regard it as a risk u take when buying 3rd party.

actually, not say nikkor confirm no problem, but lower chance, and u go back to just one place to do troubleshooting. pair a 3rd party with a nikon body, and they can ping pong u around.

my tamron sometimes has focus issues too. using d300. but nothing i can't live without. if i make a living with my gear then i would buy a nikkor, but likely i'd still keep the tamron for casual shooting or holiday usage

I dun have such issues. Went korea with it and the 18-135mm lens but end up using this Tamron all the way.

The only time I have focusing issue is when aiming at a scene with not much contrast (like a blank wall). I did try out last nite with Live View, does not have any focusing issues with different focal length.

If you are getting this combination, try it out at the shop.

I started out with the D90 + kit 18-105. It kept me happy, but only for a short while.
Now I'm using the Tamron 17-50 and have left the 18-105 in the corner of my cabinet.
D90 performs very well up to ISO1600, combined with Tamron's f2.8, fantastic for almost all low light situations.

of course, if you can afford Nikkor 17-55, go for it.
Nothing wrong with getting the kit lens for the D90, but you'll crave for more in a matter of months.

same...:)

I assume u have budget for D90 body (S$1400 referring to price found here) + the Tamron lens (S$650)= s$2050

Buy D90 with it's default kits lenses= S$1680 , u still have S$370....add Nikkor 35mm f1.8G for fast lens.

ya, I think so... and thanks to clubsnap forum's price reference... According to the sales person @ HN, D90 is indeed hottest selling DSLR right now.... they don't have anymore stock in any of their branch already... I book last Friday and luckily can get it yesterday... Cheers.
