Large crowds and heavy vehicular traffic are expected around Marina Bay and Esplanade on New Year’s Eve for the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 07/08. Police, Auxiliary Police Officers and event security officers will be deployed for crowd and traffic control duties.

The public is advised to take note of the following security and traffic arrangements:

Safety and security arrangements

Members of the public are advised to look after their belongings, especially when they are in crowded places. For security and safety reasons, bags and personal items may be subjected to checks by the Police. Members of the public are advised to co-operate with the Police and Auxiliary Police Officers should checks be conducted. They should also notify the Police or Auxiliary Police Officers of any suspicious items or persons.

Police would like to remind members of public who are out enjoying the festivities in crowded areas that there may be some in their midst who would seize this opportunity to commit crime. We would like to advise the public to remain vigilant and alert at all times. Police would also not hesitate to take action against persons who use spray foam to commit crime or cause nuisance to the general public.

The footway along Benjamin Sheares Bridge will be closed to the public from 6pm on 31 Dec 07 to 1am on 1 Jan 08 due to public safety concerns, especially of overcrowding. Members of the public will also be re-directed to other areas to watch the fireworks when the capacity in the vicinity of Esplanade is full.

Due to the anticipated large crowd, dispersal is expected to be slow after the event. Members of the public are advised to co-operate with and follow the instructions of the Police and Auxiliary Police Officers. To facilitate crowd dispersal and in the interests of public safety, members of the public may be prevented from going against the flow of the crowd movement from Esplanade to City Hall, especially during the period from midnight to 1am.

Traffic Arrangements

For the safety of spectators and to facilitate traffic arrangements for the event, the following roads will be closed to all motorists (map attached):

Motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads as heavy traffic congestion is expected, and to slow down should they need to travel along these roads or pass by the affected junctions. Motorists travelling from Shenton Way and planning to use Nicoll Highway to get to the eastern part of Singapore are advised to use the ECP entrance at Maxwell Road. Motorists planning to use Nicoll Highway to get to the western part of Singapore are advised to use Raffles Boulevard onto Republic Boulevard to get into AYE. Auxiliary Police Officers will be stationed at all affected road junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists as well as to facilitate the movement of pedestrians.

Parking at peripheral roads around Esplanade, Marina Bay vicinity, along the ECP (Benjamin Sheares Bridge) or Marina South to watch the fireworks display is strictly prohibited. Stopping of vehicles along the ECP (Benjamin Sheares Bridge) to watch the fireworks is also prohibited. Enforcement action will be taken against errant motorists and vehicles which are parked causing obstruction will be towed away.

Members of the public travelling to the area are advised to make use of public transport as congestions / diversions are expected. As heavy congestion is expected at City Hall MRT, the public is advised to use Raffles Place, Bugis and Clarke Quay MRT stations. Drivers can tune in to the radio or look out for updates on the traffic situation via EMAS advisory notices. The understanding of the public is much appreciated.

For further enquires, members of public may contact the organiser at 6828 8377 for further information on the event.
