The subject is abit soft...

Such composition very tricky for the strobe placement....the strobe lighting can easily create unnecessary shadow on your subject..

Your subject is a tunicate.

I think it got a little lost in your image, especially because there is a large OOF branch cutting across the right hand corner.

hey, thats quite interesting shot for a tunicate... the colour contrast is gd...
hmm guess u trying to create a natural framing rite? maybe u pull back a little can help ppl to really rest their eyes on the striking subject? if not.. a tighter crop can help.. but still dun have the wow factor...

hi no horse run....

excuse me for my slow respond.....just got back from bali this evening......

i'm using 2 sea & sea ys 120........the strobes are position top and bottom of the subject angling at about 45 inwards......

pls do post a sample of your pic and share your ideas.......

I can't find my slides on just the tunicate itself. But I found this one as an example.
My strobe lights is about 20-30deg angle but almost perpendicular to subject. I experiment with this angle to get something like a side lighting. It helps to bring out the color of the tunicate & nudi.

just to confirm your positioning of your strobes....did u place them on either sides of the housing pointing 20-30 deg inwards???

Actually I have another msg but was cut-off halfway due to CS database pblm.

I shoot in manual mode on my F90X. I set Shutter sp to 1/100secs, Aperture from f16-f32.
Strobes to TTL & less than 30cm from subject & slides velvia or proviaF.

Strobes angle, is almost perpendicular but slight in front of subject and at a lower angle of 20-30degs. The reason I tried this is that I want the background to be black. Occasionally I use a close-up 4T on my 105mm macro. with this fitted I can have a "electronic" aperture of f45 & f64, but u will need the strobes to be much closer - approx 20cm from subject.

U can also use another YS30 set to slave mode (no connection to camera). Ask the DM to hold to any position that u want (perhaps from bottom up angle) + two YS120 at standard position. if u do not have a 3rd "mini" strobe, try detaching one YS120 and ask DM to hold for u in position. This will ensure at least one strobe hit the subject correctly.

End of the day, give the DM a tip !!!
The rest is up to u yr composition & how u want all of us to view the images thru yr eyes.
