Planning to get my first dSLR - Some help reviewing my setup plan please? =)

Are you sure ISO 200 can reach 1/2000? I think 1/200 more like it, realistically that is, if you're shooting something near shades, not under adverse sunlight.


Anyways I got a deal for a 20D, finally settled on a body. Now I'm having the same decision making problems all over again. Does every newbie face this or just me?

I don't know which lens to get first! Probably the 50mm F1.8 since its the cheapest.

Does anyone recommend buying kit lenses first before I jump straight for the F2.8?

I just got my 40D body second hand and the first lens I got was the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens. A general walk around lens with constant f2.8.

Was also considering the kit lens but after considering felt that it was not suitable for the type of photography I was looking at.

Hm, when I read your post I just tried, I tried snapping a tree outside my window with F5.6, bright sun. ISO 200 and it was only 1/200. Unless prosumer and dSLR got big difference even with the same settings...

No actually I tried it this morning around 9-10am... hm, how about show me a shot at F5.6 ISO 200 at 1/2000?

Yeah I'll try to search through my archives for you. Can't give you a straight-from-the-cam example now cos it's raining. But anyway, we're veering totally off topic: Go for the tamron 17-50 for the 17-24mm range- you will NEED that on a 1.6crop.

EDIT: Any LR2 gurus out there can tell me how to filter my pics by f stop value? =X

Once you have the option "Metadata" selected (top of the search bar) you can select any of the existing metadata fields to search for specific values. Just checked, works great.

Hey guys, spotted something new, just wondering what do you guys think.

Sigma 20mm F1.8

or the Tamron 17-50 F2.8?

Since there is already the 50mm 1.8, it seems like the 20mm F1.8 would be a better choice, perhaps with just the slight hassle of changing lens, but the speed seems neat.

Unfortunately, I consider the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG Lens to be unusable at f/1.8 unless you are looking for a soft-focus effect. This lens is one of the softest I've seen wide open. Realistically, this will be an f/2.8 lens to most people as the center does not become decently sharp until this aperture. But wait - there goes the Sigma's uniqueness advantage for now there is a direct Canon counterpart, the Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Lens that costs about the same price (price at times is another reason to buy third party lenses). - TDP

Yea I read a few similar reviews about this lens wide open also, but the sample pics shown arent that bad, or at least I can't see why its THAT bad. If this doesn't work, are there any other F1.8 or F2 primes closer to the 17-20 side by other makers? If theres a good fast prime I rather go for the prime.
