Just over 100 years since the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight, flying machines are now commonplace, used for transport, freight, warfare, rescue and pleasure just for starters. Aerospace technology is still the realm of both big business and entrepreneurs - Moscow recently hosted an airshow in which contracts totaling $10 billion were signed, and Virgin Galactic is still working toward a private spaceliner business. Any idea what's the takeoff weight of the 747 and the thrust of the engines on that day (temperature), is the thrust to weight ratio higher than the Porsche 911? What variables are important? Wonder which will be faster.

Hmm, these question seems awfully familiar... :think:

The exact take-off weight (which BTW is absolutely not known to me) has to be known before the V1/Vr/V2 speed can be calculated.

Anyway I'll hazard a guess with reference to the charts available to me based on a 200,000 kg total take-off weight and under the following operational conditions...

• Altitude region A,
• Flaps 20 with maximum rated thrust,
• Dry and straight runway with wind factor not taken into account.

V1: 90 KIAS
Vr: 105 KIAS (note: see below)
V2: 130 KIAS

As the 105 KIAS rotation speed is below the Vmcg (Minimum Controllable Ground Speed), 122 KIAS in such a situation, the Vmcg figure has to be used in lieu of the calculated Vr figure instead. Therefore the aircraft is only rotated at 122 KIAS and the takeoff roll should not take more than 800 meters (guesstimate).

* KIAS --> (Knots, Indicated Air Speed)

225.90 km/hr rotation speed in a 800 meters takeoff roll and a duration of approximately 6 to 8 seconds and this is for a B744, Jett8 B747-281F/SCD (9V-JEB "Shogun") might just take little longer with its older GE CF6-50E2 engines.

well all we can hope for bttr SLO is perhaps lower temp. Seems dat density would b the most easiest factor .. Since pressure here in tropical Singapore is mostly constant .. hardly changes ..

According to Wikipedia, the Porsche 911 GT3 will take 13 seconds to cover 400 meters and reach 190 km/h.

1A. Between 0200-0900 on first Saturday, between 1700-2300 on third Monday and third Wednesday of every month (preventive maintenance work). In the event of emergency, runway will be re-opened in 30 minutes.

2A. Between 0240-0305, 0510-0520, 0800-0810, 1720-1730, 2320-2330 daily (inspection). In the event of emergency, runway will be re-opened within 5 minutes.

2B. Between 1945-2115 daily (maintenance). In the event of emergency, runway will be re-opened in 30 minutes.

Seems as if this is another location whereby UAV flight test and training are conducted, most probably for naval reconnaissance and surveillance operations.

LIMA 2009 will be held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) just right next to Langkawi International Airport.
