[pinholecam] A week with ...... (random ramblings of a lens junkie) - 2015

Very nice holiday shots! Where is this place?
Btw, just curious, is there wifi/internet in such resorts?

Thanks for popping by.

This was Telunas Beach Resort (Batam).
No wifi/internet (which was incredible to me, just breaks away the chains of phone slavery for the stay and I must say, the mind really felt more calm/relaxed. ) :D

Working distance for full body shots with a 135mm gets rather far.
In return, what I get, is that perspective compression and shallow DOF associated with a longer lens.
Having a max aperture of f2 helps with giving a shallow DOF of course.

Oddly, despite my fantasies of shooting wide open, shallow DOF shots of the kids, when I choose this lens for the trip, I really fell short this time.
I found myself stopping down more often than not, for more DOF or for scenes like this one which really wants more DOF than less.

Perhaps its expected, as I often find that locally, with familiar subjects, I tend to want less DOF for isolation.
But when in a foreign location, I want that context and its often easier to do it with more DOF.
Kind of like I'd like a record that I brought my kids to an island resort (with enough DOF to show it) rather than a portrait with shallow DOF which in future years, I can't recall was Sentosa or Indonesia.

A rather abrupt end to the 7 picts for a lens for a week in this case for the FD135/2.
There are a few nicer shots, but they all have my wife in it, which I don't share.
So I'll have to settle for 4 picts instead for this round.

Edit :

Another 2 picts taken with this lens, just to have better closure.
Still in the water/fun/holiday/kids theme of things.

A week with the Pentax FA31 Limited

Certainly my most used lens for the trip.

The Pentax FA31ltd.

20150626-DSC04703 by jenkwang, on Flickr

This is part of the 3 limited lenses being offered by Pentax.
Limited meaning very high quality with a limited capacity for the factory to build rather than limited edition (built in production run batches ) .

This is the most expensive of the 3 limited lenses and the widest.
Commensurate for the pricing is a very high standard of build quality, all metal construction, built in hood with felt lined interior, unique 31mm focal length and fast f1.8 aperture.
Fast wides are never cheap.
Oh.. yes, and a leather pouch. ;)

My wife says if she ever catches me shooting at her she will break my camera...literally speaking! I believe her...LOL :D

This an excellent stuff JK! Love this thread except for it is making me look into Pentax adapters and lenses and I still don't have my Nikon kit finished yet darn it!!!

Ha..ha...
Thanks.

I just choose not to publicize my wife. :D

To me, this is certainly one of the lenses that 'defines' the Pentax look.
A bold drawing style (esp in high contrast relationships between subject and bkgnd), pleasing bokeh in most situations, deep contrast and rich warmer colors.
All in a nice well built smallish package.

As to what I mean by drawing style, its almost like the outline of the in focus subject is being drawn by a 2B pencil (thick and dark outlines) as opposed to say a 2H one (capable of fine sharpness but lacking the gross contrast to define an image as clearly).
In the right situations, coupled with the contrast, this lens certainly adds pop to an image to me.
All while being a 'widish' focal length of 31mm.

31mm is sort of an odd ball focal length, when it comes to the usual focal length offerings.
The usual ones are 28mm, 35mm.
These 2 focal length has long been the usual options for the photographer who wants a wider walkabout lens than the 50mm.
The wider perspective, often gives added context to the subject as compared to the tighter framing, longer working distance of the 50mm.

31mm sits right in-between, both numerically and usage wise.
I tend to shy away from the 28mm being too wide for me, often too close an engagement distance and not as optically fast nor high performing (unless big bucks and size/weight is involved).
(another reason being that during film days, it was the widest I had and I kinda overused it to the point that I'm kinda afraid to use it nowadays. )
35mm is often excellent, but there will be a few moments that its 'not wide enough'.

So the 31mm is really that in-between lens.
Sway or step back one step, and its wide enough to be close to 28mm, move in one step and its more like the 35mm.
All this while being fast (f1.8), optically superb with low distortion(more like most 35mm), all in a reasonable size/weight.
One of the reasons why I ended up using this lens for probably 85% of my shots for the trip.

Being on the pricey side (to me), imo, the lens is certainly less justified on apsc as it is on FF.
Reason being that a lot of this price goes to what I think are :
1. High quality all metal build
2. Proper AF/MF functionality (not some focus by wire or loosey MF ring of many AF lenses)
3. Good size for a fast wide
4. Any fast wide is not really cheap
5. Wide but still having good bokeh which is not always the case for fast 28mm.

On apsc, the equivalent focal length becomes nearer to 50mm and this it becomes a rather expensive 'normal'.
Not that its bad, just a bit pricey imo for a '50'.

This is perhaps the one lens that I feel is more justified on the FF format.
A wide FOV, the versatility of a 28-35mm lens, a fast aperture for low light as well as being able to give that 'shallow DOF look' while still showing off the environment.

A fast aperture certainly helps.
f1.8, suffices with todays high ISO capable cameras.
Not f1.4, but not f1.4 big too, and I certainly value good encumbrance a lot for the lenses that I use.

When the light fell of with the coming of dinner time and night, I simply slung the camera with the FA31ltd with me "just in case".
There was a campfire activity that night (songs, a bonfire, marsh mellows), and it started just after dinner.
With the very usable focal length and f1.8, I did not feel the need to wander back to the villa for another lens. (Thankfully)

Having a 24mm and a 12mm in the the bag, I did not use the 31ltd much for landscape shots, certainly something I am trying to explore a bit more nowadays (the 28-50mm range for landscapes).
But as the everyday, go to general lens, there is nothing left wanting for the lens for me.

Sharpness is already good from wide open and with the characteristic of most 35mm lenses, which is low distortion and very good sharpness stopped down.
Top these up with the contrast, and flare tolerance.

Leaving Paradise -for now.. by jenkwang, on Flickr

Final pict for the 4 lens series from my short stay in Telunas Resorts.
I had an enjoyable time there and so did the kids.
Glad too that I brought along some nice and fun lenses which did not hinder me enjoying the holiday.

A week doing some B side beats
===================================

20141108-DSC06080 by jenkwang, on Flickr
Hmm... which lens will I use today...?

Not really new content, rather, old ones that I have only managed to start going over this week.
I basically already posted the ones I wanted to post for a Japan thread and the rest just sat in the harddisk, and more trips came along and I never managed to get back to them.

B side beats is basically that.
As in an LP where the best songs were often placed in the "A side" (anyone remember those?).
The "B side" often the less known songs and in many cases, seldom played as the LP owner with short attention span or time, never gets to that point of flipping the record.

But just like the B side, one fine day, the listener will flip to that side, listen to it, and find some gems.
Maybe even a song that reflects the particular mood the listener is in on that day, which he/she never bothered with on other days.

Similarly, I guess these are the picts that I've brushed past, and now in retrospect, just adds to my experience of the whole trip.

Perhaps it holds true to the lens of the week as well......
