when in outdoor lighting too bright, you won't be able to see the lcd screen. so it will be better to compose with viewfinder

try f4.5 or f5.6 or else can try to photoshop away.
but i get a feeling you don't understand how the aperture value work ?
i prefer to have star burst effect at night.

also, u can save battery if u use viewfinder..

can do panning shots with it... LCD screen will lag..

but u can't zoom with this vf and also it is very expensive... $300 + i think..

So... how does aperture work? Why got starburst? If I use DSLR, will I be able to get away from this?

when you go up to F8, less light enters through the lens, as you can see your 1st shot is brighter in the background.
likewise F2 allows more light in, so any lights that are brighter than background or foreground subjects have some sort of light aura around it.

you can try it out at home in a dark room with just the table lamp on, the diff between F2 and F8 can see clearly on the 2 diff pictures you take.
play around with the aperture values especially in the middle range until you achieved the result you wanted.

even on dslr if you use F11 onwards at night, you will also get some star burst effects...

Just curious, if the 2 night shots would have been taken using iA, wouldn't the ideal Fx be selected automatically? I assume it would then be the ideal setting. Would be nice if mrericlee show us the same shot taken in iA mode. Being a beginner, using iA is the easiest mode and it always turn out ok for me as I'm not overly critical about noise, etc. To me, the shot must be WYSIWYG. Still think that in today's 21st century technology, the hardware should take care of everything automatically (as one would have shot in Manual mode) and softwares will take care of all the creative effects you can imagine. As they say, if the original is not that good, there is only so much you can do to improve the image using softwares.

I thought the halos & starburst added character to the two photos which otherwise may look flat?
No?

i suggest you use P-mode instead.
once you adjust the WB, iso limit and shutter limit to 1/4 sec, basically the cam will select random settings for you, be it aperture or shutter value.

Thanks for advise, I've set the ISO limit to 800 and WB to Auto. How do I set shutter limit (I assume you mean shutter speed)? If I do it, will it give me proper exposure like I've seen in the Pany ad (the one shown in the gym). Perfect picure everytime without any blur images.

1/4 shutter speed is the lowest possible hand held speed i can think of.
iso perhaps best is set to limit at 400.
but when you half-press the shutter button and see red values for shutter speed and aperture which means likely for shot to be underexposed, perhaps you'll like to switch to M mode to get balanced exposure, sometimes no choice may even have to use a mini-tripod.
the above settings are more recommended for night shooting.

in the day i don't foresee any problems if you use f2 all the time...

I do know that f2 more light, f8 less light. But why less light must be starburst?

The smaller the hole (Aperture) light pass thru, the higher the diffraction (spreading of light).

Starburst are the effect of light passing thru a small hole.
