At that price it won't sell. I bought my Scan Dual-II for around $900 from Cathay. The SD-III should be around the same price.

maybe? I bought Elite II at $1850.

So i guess Dual III will be $2000 ? :D

I don't mind paying $2000 if the performance is better than Elite II.

The Elite-II has very different specs. It doesn't compete with the Scan Dual series. If the SD-III is meant to replace the SD-II, it will typically be in the same price range.

The Elite-II does multi sampling, has digital ICE, supports Firewire, and has a dynamic range of 4.8. My SD-II has a DR of 3.2, doesn't support firewire, no multi sampling or Digital ICE, hence the price point.

Sorry for sounding so blur..but this kind of scanner can perform the role of a normal scanner or not? $900 for the SD-II seems rather out of this world............:D But I haev been rather frustrated trying to scan prints directly, especially when they are of the gloss variety. My scanner (Microtek 3700) picks up a lot of stray reflections and noise, and it cannot be easily removed in PS. Or at least I don't know how to. Also colour fidelity is rather poor.

Hi

I'm still using the SD I...

Do you mean it is too cheap, or too expensive?

Haven't you answered your own question? :)

The SD-I/II/III are dedicated film/slide scanners. You can't scan prints.

So u mean u scan directly from the negatives or slides lah? Cannot scan prints means I have to retain a normal scanner right?

Sorry for being ambiguous. I mean it's way too expensive!! :D

But I was thinking that a better scanner may have options to tweak to remove those reflections. But do I suppose correctly that scanning direct from negatives would be much better? Will it eliminate the washed out effect?

Elite ll got GEM, ICE and ROC.

The DiMAGE Scan Elite II is one of a few desktop film scanners in its class that provide Digital ICE3™ (Digital ICE Cubed). Digital ICE3™ is a combination of three sophisticated digital enhancement tools from Applied Science Fiction: Digital ICE (Image Correction & Enhancement), Digital ROC (Reconstruction of Color), and Digital GEM (Grain Equalization and Management). Digital ICE3™ saves time and money by producing professional-quality images without resorting to time-consuming digital retouching, or hiring outside digital service bureaus.

This trio of image processing tools can be selected individually or in combination. Digital ICE™ significantly reduces surface defects in the film such as scratches and fingerprints; the advantage of this tool is apparent when working with enlarged images.* Digital ROC™ reconstructs the color of faded or badly exposed film, allowing photographers to preserve their film assets and protect their shooting investments. Digital GEM™ minimizes image grain without effecting image detail, enhancing pictures from high-speed film or enlargements of high-resolution scans.
* Digital ICE3™ is recommended primarily for use with color film; it can also be used with chromagenic black and white film. Digital ICE is not recommended for use with Kodachrome film.
