Photography Course in Polytechnics

As said, polys' dip in general are very broad. It's only towards the end of your 3-yr course (either Year 2 or Year 3) that you are specialising which can be not very in depth due to the period given per semester and on top of it, there's electives that you need to complete in total irrelevance to what you are pursuing. This is called all-rounded education imposed by MOE.

Having said that, choose a course wisely in poly.

Temasek poly is much better than laselle or Nafa for photography.

FYI, going through this course doesn't make you into somebody.

Photography is also not about ISO, f-stop and blah as the list goes but Photography is an art form.

FYI, Visual comm might be a good choice. HOWEVER it doesn't entirely covers photography. It just widen your creativity that's all. If you are going for a course that covers photography entirely, visual comm is not the one. Visual comm covers a lot of handwork, photoshopping, javascripting, animation etc.. You might be spending a lot of time doing all sorts of work apart from photography. Photography is just a part and parcel of visual comm.

Visual communication: Visual communication as the name suggests is communication through visual aid. It is the conveyance of ideas and information in forms that can be read or looked upon. Primarily associated with two dimensional images, it includes: signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, colour and electronic resources. It solely relies on vision. It is form of communication with visual effect. It explores the idea that a visual message with text has a greater power to inform, educate or persuade a person. It is communication by presenting information through Visual form. The evaluation of a good visual design is based on measuring comprehension by the audience, not on aesthetic or artistic preference. There are no universally agreed-upon principles of beauty and ugliness. There exists a variety of ways to present information visually, like gestures, body languages, video and TV. Here, focus is on the presentation of text, pictures, diagrams, photos, et cetera, integrated on a computer display. Actually renowned art school like Nafa is not as expensive as you think as they are being recognised for their proven track record and have received a wide sponsors of scholarship and bursary, if you have a strong passion, you can really chiong and work very hard, then go for scholarship and bursary like me, at the end of the day it might cost even lesser then poly.

FYI, both Nafa and Lasalle offer 3+1 degree program, meaning to say that 3 years of diploma + 1 year to degree. Time and tides waits for no man, so treasure it. :thumbsup:

but since last 2 years when i have taken my N level results, i wanted to go to NAFA,
so i asked around. 2 common things i heard was, no.1; too ex. no.2; in singapore,
with NAFA, hardly u can have a Good future, unless u go overseas. is this true? :dunno:

Having an education at a good school is just a starting point. A good future later on in life is highly dependable on the person's will to succeed.

Graduating from overseas doesn't necessarily guarantee you a good future. I have friends who hold degrees from overseas who ended up bumming around after coming back to singapore. On the other hand, I know some that dropped out from secondary schools who are running great businesses and driving big cars now.

Look through all the school's course outlines thoroughly first, and see which school offers the best education in your desired field. Different schools will have slightly different prerequisites for each major.

The rest is up to you.

Define good future in YOUR PERSONAL definition.

What does it mean to u in your life?
Make lots and lots of $?
Achieve great artistic heights?
Able to pursue what u want to do?

Life is not all about money, but then again the sad truth is that without $ u cannot survive. Art industry here is barely there.

The sad truth is that photography can hardly feed you in Singapore, unless u're very well known and have a constant stream of shoots.

Like they said, u can take up a course in visual comm or graphic/industrial design, then pursue photography as a side hobby. Photography can be self learnt.

Private schools tend to be a bit more expensive but you have to see what they are offering. They are offering much intensive stuff than what Poly is giving to some extent. There are poly courses like NYP's DMD is extremely hardcore.

My passion of photography leads me to take my BFA in Production Animation. Do they link? To a certain extent, yes. I learn about the artistic aspects, traditional art, composition and also video cinematography and more.

Btw, even the great Picasso needed a photographer to help him in one of his works.

Having a diploma is a thing. But studying for a diploma is another. After learning all the stuffs, you tend to make use of the tools taught, and therefore widen your creativity etc etc etc.

Diploma is just a piece of paper.


Just to share; I'm currently a NAFA student, and the things I learn in school are very useful, though not all. I did not regret choosing NAFA, however.. you need to be very dedicated, as assignments stack like there is no tomorrow. So therefore time management has to be good. And NAFA has the tools you need in the design world.

And yes very true that art cannot feed you in Singapore.

I did not regret choosing NAFA, however.. you need to be very dedicated, as assignments stack like there is no tomorrow. So therefore time management has to be good. My opinion is that Singapore currently has got no place for art as its not as treasured as other countries.

So if you want to do photography, sad to say that you will have to do it somewhere else and not come back to Singapore to do it.

There's no course like Diploma in Photography per se.

In fact, most, if not, all diploma courses don't give in-depth education in the aspect of photography. Getting into media/design-related courses would usually get you photography as one of your modules, but that's just as good as it gets. However, curriculum has it at the basics - i.e. you don't get to go specifically into it - might suit if you're learning how to cam-whore better.

But if you want to learn and focus on photography (and feel private schools like NAFA or La-Salle), I think you might wanna consider NTU's Bach. in Photography and Digital Images. Um, it might be quite some time before you can actually get to study what you really really like. But take it as time to save up, prepare yourself and experiment more with composition with your current camera.

Well, you might wanna choose your poly course wisely, so you could get into the uni you desire. Usually, it'd be something you like.
