I plan to write a review with pictures over the weekend on 2 companies I just sampled, namely Photobook Express and Photobook Singapore. Both make affordable, high quality books using the Taopix software. If you are patient, wait a couple of days and read about it. :)

HI,

I have been using shutterfly. Just design the book first and save it, they periodically give out free 8x8 hardcover photobooks. It is easier to get these discounts when you have multiple accounts. They do ship direct to singapore.

The other company (local) is "album stories". Got a voucher pack that made it quite affordable at one of the computer shows.

I have just done a review in the Clubsnap review section. Check it out. :)

i done one for a friend... from just1book but i find the paper is too thin to my liking. i did not customised to choose a higher end paper though.

Yes... I did not want to name the companies I did not review, but I made it clear why I only reviewed Photobook Singapore and Photobook Express in my review. If you want to know how the pages will look after abuse, just go to the showrooms and look at their sample books. If they are made well, they should still look good after being 'molested' my many hands.

I saw the display copy of just1book at Dhoby Exchange... it looked a bit scruffy.

How thick should the paper be? If you take a look at your office A4 paper, that's usually 80gsm. If you stack 2 together, it's 160gsm. Personally, I think the paper should be at least 200gsm to achieve the heavy, classy feel.

hi nottipiglet,

thread re-located to Consumer Corner........... still, good write-up !!

just to add, i seen for myself, a friend, done a photobook for himself for his portfolio purpose, i am very impressed wtih the paper quality and worksmanship. he got this done by photobookmart, i think i will give it a try for myself once i have enough photos. :)

Thanks. :)

Consumer Corner is good for me. Most people just follow the Googlebots... so, they should be able to find the review anywhere, that is if they are interested in the subject. ;)

do you have any experience with the two companies you mentioned doing softcover books? :)

No. I think softcover books are really flimsy and don't look professional. If I want a softcover book, I would rather go to Fotohub and get a FotoJournal. That's a very nice book. It is actually made out of photo paper... very thick and very good colour reproduction, just like photos. It's a bit pricy because they price it like photo printing. Once in a while, they have roadshows at malls, which would be a good time to pick up a package of 3 books, which would work out to be cheaper. I have done many FotoJournals... and to this day, I wish they have hardcover FotoJournals. :D

... but these 2 companies do offer softcover books. It's just that after spending so much time scrapbooking, you want the books to look good.

hmm initially i had the same thinking until i saw my friend's soft cover photobook... quite impressed. the paper had some thickness (at least thicker then the one i do for my fren), and the cover dun look filmsy (almost like those storybooks u find in bookstores).

Yes, it's not that bad... but I'm just being very critical. But the reason why people choose softcover is because of pricing right? Currently, Photobook Singapore is running an offer on their website for a small imagewrap book. By small, they mean 8" by 8", which actually isn't that small. I think it's very cheap. If not for the fact that I already have many coupons (I have 4 left) for Photobook Express' large book, I might think about it. :)
