Hello all,

What are your favourite reads when it comes to photography magazines or periodicals? I currently read the following:

1. B&W Photography - feast for the eyes in terms of what is considered art-gallery quality prints.
2. Lenswork - The quality of the print is just amazing.
3. American Photo - Interesting articles and insights from worldclass photographers.

I am contemplating a few others I see at local bookstores - amongst them that Leica magazine. Any good?

Cheers, B

uhmmm... doesnt anyone read photo literature?

1. B&W Photography

is this ""black and white magazine - for collectors of fine photography" (http://www.bandwmag.com/current/index.html) or "black and white photography" (http://www.thegmcgroup.com/item--Black-and-White-Photography--1003BW.html)?

For the first.. i think that the prints are a feast.. the tones and quality high..i enjoy looking through and feeling inspired.. but this magazine is expensive to me so i seldom buy it but browse when im borders or kino..

the other one called "black and white photography" has feature stories and technical information on printing and some digital stuff as well.. i find some stuff informative and most times buy this magazine $13+.. was slightly cheaper in the UK!

for the rest..im not too sure..but since you mentioned will take a further look next time..

Yes indeed, i was referring to: ""black and white magazine - for collectors of fine photography". aint it fantastic?

try also lenswork. its even more amazing to me, and the small, minimalist layout allows the photo to shine and communicate through.

i got some back copies of Forum magazine by hasselblad. also pretty good, with some photographer narratives. not sure if this is in current production tho.

best of luck in your photo education.

Hello Bangles! I like American Photo and Lenswork. I saw your other thread in B&S about wanting old magazines. I have a special edition issue of AP (100 Photographers or something like that), and an old issue of Lenswork, which I can pass to you. I'm clearing out my bookshelves, so I'll put them aside for you.

I usually read books more than periodicals. One I'm reading now is 'Refractions: Thoughts on Aesthetics and Photography', written by photographer Ralph Gibson.

Wrkshy: Whoa this is spooky! i just returned that very same book to the National Library last week - Refractions by Ralph Gobson!!! I like it very much, light reading and at the same time very informative in terms of what goes into the making of his fantabulous shots.

i do read books too, when my mind can take so much heavy info. the ones that i am keen on are thoughts on photo critiques, philosophy of photography and the occasional photo books. I am reading a b&w pictoral book of a Chinese orphanage by someone called Bowen. Beautiful portraiture work of often unwilling/confused/wary orphans.

Yes, please do keep the mags aside for me. many thanks. maybe i will open a photo library some day. ;)

They are available at:
1. Kinokuniya at takashimaya,
2. magazine shops along holland V,
3. riceball.

I subscribe to Lenswork (much cheaper than buying from book store). Enjoy reading the thought that goes behind the work. And yes, the prints are truly mind boggling.

Another note about Lenswork, these guys have class! During one of their Christmas special issues, they enclosed a CDROM on product catalogues. The CDROM was a defective, so I just dropped them an e-mail about it. Within a few days, I received an apology from the editor, and the next week, I received the replacement CDROM, that came with a complimentary copy of Lenswork Extended and a note apologizing on the defect.

That's what I call world class!

Hello Sven,

hi,
anyone knows where to get the second mentioned magazine in Sin ? "black and white photography"
a bit more handson, the other one is really fine art collector stuff.
cheers
Sven

I know three places: the two magazine shops at Holland Village (Lorong Liput) and sometimes MPH. But they have only few and they are sold after the first week.

Cheers,
Matthias

thanks for the tip, gunbucker! Lenswork is definitely something i'd buy a subscription for.

I like practical photography. I haven't read much of the others.

Regarding Lenswork, if you can't find it in the shops, try the 8th floor arts reference section at the National Library at Bras Basah. They have issues dating back to 2004.

I got my copy from a library book sale. You guys might want to check those out. Old magazines (one or two years' old) are sold off for as little as a dollar each, and some are still in pretty good condition. The sales are usually around the June holidays, so keep an eye out on their website (www.nlb.gov.sg) for info.

Btw, I heard that the library has changed their borrowing policy for magazines - from a loan period of three weeks to one week. So the chances of borrowing an issue you want are better than before. That is, unless people still insist on hogging the mags.
