Photo Essay : Year of The Rabbit

I've not been a fan of Chinese New Year since my grandma passed away many years back. CNY used to be about us as kids waking up early on New Year Day 1, dressed ourselves up for a visit to Grandma. Ang baos, sweets, crackers, playing with my cousins and playing cards... these were special in my life.

As I grew older, CNY became just another holiday for me. However, I am determined to rekindle that Spirit of CNY hoping to start my own tradition involving my 1.5 yr old daughter.

While searching for inspirations, I've joined the RF.SG boys for the recent outings and these pictures sums up what CNY means to me. I tested the freshly CLA Blackpaint M4 and Canon 50 f1.5 LTM. Provia pushed iso 1250. Should have overexposured a bit more.

The creature that started it all... Without it and the firecrackers, there's no Chinese New Year.

The maddening crowd... all rushing to buy clothings and food to spend a good fat year.

And what is Chinese New Year, if there's no love and kinship in the air?

Happy Chinese New Year .. Dave

I've skipped china town for at least the last 2 CNY, but your series makes me want to go back again.

Excellent CNY series!
I like the color lanterns shot...very different from my b/w version.

Dave, only a loving parent really knows the importance of tradition and trying ones best to bring up our child/children with the right values.

I'm truly sorry about how your Grandma's passing changed your outlook on CNY. Happy though, that you've taken the initiative to try and change it all for the sake of your little princess.

I too never liked any of the festive holidays, be it CNY or Christmas (although I'm a Christian). Funny how I always felt very lonely during the festivities.

I'm glad to say that, like you with the birth of my little boy 9yrs ago, I made an effort not to let him feel like me and tried to teach him the importance of both occasions. Just remember our kids look up to us and we have to walk the talk too and not just talk the talk.

Take care and i look forward to catching up soon. Almost forgot to add, Great pics too!

Thanks guys! Hard to find inspirations these days when I can hardly come out to shoot on wkends.

Jon, thanks and yea we should set good example for our kids.

Thanks for sharing Dave.
Your series has alot of nostalgia...makes me hear and smell the sounds of Chinatown.

thanks for sharing dave. i resonates some with me as cny hasn't been quite the same since the passing of my grandmother - the inspirational and emotional head of the family. but the family moves on with the traditions and the bonds in celebration of the family that she has brought up.

kids are always a hit during cny... they get richer (receiving angpows), and the parents get poorer (giving out angpows)... and they will enjoy it even more when they are surrounded by their loving family and friends.

good start in getting out of the rut!! ;)

My wife's favorite family occasion is definitely the CNY. She's been nagging me about it and really want our family to enjoy this period of reunion and bonding.

Unfortunately, when my grandma passed, the family got involved in rivalry and dispute over inheritance. We've never been A family since then. I don't even know how most of my cousins look like these days!

Anyway, thanks for the encouraging words. I will continue my essay with hopefully, some more shots of our family reunion next week when we will spend sometime in Melaka.

Happy New Year guys!!!
