that's true. the raw images looked more similar, with D70 being better in some crops:

Heh, I was going to quote that page too ;)

There's definitely something strange going on with that Nikon RAW image. Perhaps Phil did not convert them properly. Notice:

1. The horrible sharpening artefacts on the ball chain. The highlights are rendered in a harsh manner but at the same time the whole ball is not as distinct as the 300D image.

2. The harsh vertical lines on the Bailey's label in the D70 image.

3. The crayon image is softer on the D70. The chip still can not be seen clearly.

Looking at point (1) and (2) it made me think that the D70 RAW image was over-sharpened, but (3) seems to contradict that.

I definitely disagree with Phils conclusion here.

I was thinking that Phil had swapped the pictures by mistake because it looks like either:
- D70 had over sharpening and halos
or
- D70 has many moire effects

Looking at the full 100% picture (not the crop, they are 200%) the problems look like moire effect.

Moire is going to be for the D70 what autofocus what for the 10D (though I heard the 10D can be recalibrated)
