Hope CASE whack them hard...
Talk about the petrol price, in Malaysia for 97 unleaded petrol current price is RM 2.00 per litre for Singapore registered cars. The petrol price different between two countries just too great, in the past petrol companies had mention many time that the high cost of land and labour had contributed to the high petrol price in Singapore.
IMHO we shouldn't bring Malaysia into the discussion as their fuel prices were previously subsidized, and now using a managed float approach. Local pump prices are largely in line with other countries without fuel subsidies.
The petrol tax hike is one of the best tax revenues by the government as it will affect everybody. Those who don't drive think that the raising petrol prices will have no impact on them are too naive.
I just hope major changes can be made to the way we pay for basic commodities like rice, petrol, sugar, etc.
Government should control such prices and should there be adjustment, it should be through tax and not for retailer to jack up based on how they compute like the case of petrol. These idea of leaving free market is not working in singapore because in our case, most are monopolised by a few players. NTUC and POSB are now also part of the players.
