Perseids 2007 Meteor Shower

I suddenly realized that no one had post this information, so hope that it's not too late.

For those who interested to shoot meteor, this is a great chance: The peak of the annual Perseids Meteor Shower(from July 17 to August 24) is expected to occur in the night from 12 to 13 of August. The maximum rate during the peak is around 100 meteor per hour at a dark site.

Although the radiant point (the point in the sky that meteors appear to originate from) will only raise around 1am at the North-East direction, you should be able to see the meteor even before that.

Tried yesterday. The night was horrible. Full of clouds and not a single clear window. Good luck for those who are going to try tmr.

The general direction is northeast, about 45 degrees elevation should be ok. But generally the meteors can be all over the sky.

looked for 15 to 30 mins last nite on and off
did not see anything

Went for ob at ECP last night. Caught one meteor, and I happened to be exposing my cam in the right direction at the right time! One lucky shot ;p This meteor streaked past just next to Jupiter, in the constellation Scorpius.

Overall skies were pretty bad though. Intermittent clouds and high clouds. And of course light pollution. But proof it's still not impossible to catch these in SG!

Sorry dude, don't mean to be rude/throw bucket of cold water. But that 'streak' you caught is definitely not one of the Perseids Meteor.

Why am I so sure? Because Jupiter would have set at 2:23 AM at the South-Western direction. Whereas Perseus would have just risen from the North-Eastern direction. So, you are pointing at an entirely wrong direction.

But you might have really caught a meteor, or a satellite passing by, or even an aircraft, just not a Perseid definitely. Nice capture of Scorpius though.

Hmm what I caught was definitely a meteor. I think it's a Perseid cos if you draw a line backward from the meteor (which streaked from top down in the photo) it goes all the way back to the North where Perseus is about to rise. Perseids meteors don't need to be in the constellation Perseus mah, just the radiant of the meteor needs to be from there. I took the photo at about 12.30am, before Perseus rose. Could be a sporadic, will never know...

I'm more inclined to think that it is a sporadic meteor. There is a rather low chance for a perseid to streak past at that angle in the trajectory, and appears near Jupiter. But you are lucky to have caught anything. I camped a whole night on the sister's island and caught nil.

Yeah agreed that we were lucky to catch anything at all, perseid, sporadic, or otherwise At least it wasn't a wasted trip.

I beg to differ. From the look of the picture, the 'meteor' was streaking upwards towards the Zenith direction from the Western horizon.

Yes, Perseids are radiant from the constellation of Perseus and can be found anywhere in the sky. But the direction where the 'meteor' was heading is definitely off. So it cannot be a Perseid.

The sky over Sister's Island? Not too good. I was at the little Sister's Island, the area facing the east provides a good view over much of the sky, but with Sentosa to my left, you can expect a fair bit of light pollution. That night, the sky was bad, cloudy all the way.
